there are a lot of variables here.
as KJo and ED said, the car situation is special since the dealers often get "incentives" or whatnot for getting someone to using the in-house loan company, so that's a kind of weird situation.
for other big ticket items likes houses or planes, i think it's usually more of an issue of "can ithe salesman close the sale NOW". if you agree to a price and then say "... assuming i can get financing", then that makes it easy to get out of the deal for whatever reason (e.g., change of heart, etc.).
for services and/or more mundane high-ticket items that usually don't require financing, cash is useful because:
- some unethical vendors choose not to report certain cash sales as income and/or they reprt the sale price as lower than it actually was all in an effort to avoid taxes.
- in other cases, employees are able to do something similar and skim a little off the top and report a different price to their employers (depends on the business).
- many places are willing to give a discount since they dodge some fees (e.g., CC) if they get cash.
- others simply prefer cash so they don't have to wait the ridiculous amount of time that CC companies actually take to pay the money you've charged (they make SO much from float).
- with cash, they avoid the potential issue of a sale getting challenged and therefore not paid (at least temporarily).
also note that a lot of people say "cash" when checks will often do -- these are the people who just want to dodge CC fees and are usually dealing with a group of customers who don't write bad checks.
