Resurrecting this thread as I'm looking to get some new reading material.

From Xaston's very old list I've read the books that are bolded (based on his suggestion I'm pretty sure)

1. Wild Animals I Have Known
2. The Last Word
3. The Clockwork Orange
4. The Perks of Being a Wallflower
5. Breakfast of Champions
6. Slaughterhouse Five
7. The Gambler
8. A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius
9. In Search of Schrodinger's Cat
10. Brave New World
11. JOB: A Comedy of Justice
12. Pilgrims at Tinker Creek
13. Great Apes
14. The World According to Garp
15. Six Easy Pieces
16. Cat's Cradle
17. The Fountainhead
18. Six Not So Easy Pieces
19. The Boat That Wouldn't Float
20. Invisible Monsters

21. QED
22. Down the River with Henry David Thoreau
23. Lost in the Cosmos
24. The Elegant Universe
25. Chronicle of a Death Foretold
26. Notes from Underground

27. Atlas Shrugged
28. The Stranger
29. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance
30. Zarathustra
31. Fabric of Reality

I really enjoyed Invisible Monsters (I've read pahlaniuk's other books already though), Cat's Cradle, and Perks of being a wallflower. I really enjoy reading clancy books but have already hit the fairly well known ones (Rainbow Six, The sum of all Fears, etc). Over the summer I read two novels (one nonfiction) about biological weapons and stuff that I thought was really interesting (The cobra event and The Hot Zone).

One of my high school teachers always used to go on and on about reading Guns, Germs, and Steel... should this be first on my list? Of the suggestions already posted on this thread, which would you think I'd like based on this incredibly brief post? Any new suggestions and/or authors that you think I'd like?

EDIT: Forgot I had read The gambler. Also, I really liked Doestevsky's stuff, but I just feel like some of its literary value got lost in translation.

I'll only suggest one book: ACCORDIAN CRIMES by Annie Proulx. This novel traces what happens to an accordian that comes to New Orleans from Italy. Later, this accordian is owned by Hispanics, Germans, Cajuns, and Blacks. She is one of the best stylist writers alive. There is a rich, researched history. This is a unique book.

She wrote SHIPPING NEWS and BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN. She is an award winning writer.
