Nope, don't care much for any of those, save Tom Waits.

pulling this out of my ass, but you may want to try some sample tracks from amazon (the snippets they have):

The The

Moby

Soup Dragons

Depeche Mode

Jack Johnson

Sisters of Mercy (pls kill me now, northview)

Bob Schneider (the recent label stuff is pretty good, but his best work is in the locally made CDs that you can only get at live shows and in austin, tx shops. maybe check e-bay or look for a fan site/forum.)

Dave Matthews (the live two-CD set at some college. just him singing and two guitars. the DMB stuff is just so-so, imo, but this acoustic set is pretty amazing.)

REM (most people i know who like the smiths and the cure also like REM.)

i realize that some of these are older bands and/or you may have already been there and done that, but i'm trying....

stuff that i love but may not be your "style":

maceo parker
jazz (icool jazz and bossa nova have been my recent flavors of choice)
dreams come true ("good" japanese pop... you might have to get imported stuff)
missy ellliot (if you like hip-hop)

ok.... i vaguely remembered that there was a cool site that BBC Click Online reviewed. after doing some searches:

http://www.last.fm/

this is a newer version of the website (used to be audioscrobbler -- see below). based on collecting data on what people actually listen to, they did some correlation analyses. type in a band name, click on "find similar artistis" and/or "see more similar artists", and there you go. i did this with "the black crowes", and the list they came up with was about 90% of stuff that i know that i REALLY like.

http://www.audioscrobbler.net/

this is the back-end that collected all of the data for last.fm.

http://www.pandora.com/

nifty site similar to last.fm.

http://www.allmusic.com/

great music site in general. if you look up a band, they have a TON of information including similar artisits, see also, influenced by, and followers.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,12353 ... ticle.html

year-old article that may or may not be interesting.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/c ... 707239.stm

the motivation for this post.

hope this helps.

Fiona Apple. specifically "When the Pawn....." "Extraordinary Machine" is good too.

Radiohead. like coldplay, but artistically significant.

The Beatles. obvious choice, but i didnt see them on your list.

The Mars Volta. just because everyone should. even if you're not normally into this kind of music.

Erykah Badu. "Live." the only artist i've ever heard whose live record blows away her studio stuff.

I used to manage Joe Ely. This is great Texas music. He is very popular in England.

I also like Buddy Holly, Willie Nelson, and the Dixie Chicks...all West Texans. They are all very popular in England.

slayer.
Be glad your opponents refuse to fold; if they didn't, you just might go broke.
