I agree about the cast around Jeter, BUT Jeter was the only Yankee in consideration for the MVP. I thought it would actually hurt Mourneau that he had 2 other possible candidates (Santana - even though pitchers don't usually win MVP's - and Mauer) on his team which could have taken votes away from him. I remember in 1988 when that happened to the Mets. Strawberry and McReynolds took votes away from each other and Gibson ended up picking up the MVP. I don't even think he hit .300 that year and had less than 20 HR's. He didn't even make the All Star team that year.
