Who's your pick?
My choices...
MVP:
NL - Albert Pujols
AL - Derek Jeter
Both tough calls. I like Ortiz for the AL but playing for a basically failing team hurts him I suppose, and also being a DH whilst Jeter plays great defense. Giambi and Morneau are big time candidates IMO, Giambi cos he carried NY when half their team was injured (but still 2nd to Jeter really as a team leader) and Morneau because he's just been brilliant. Dye did well too but on a team that badly underachieved.
Pujols and Howard really, take your pick in the NL - I tend to go for the guy who played the better defense and carried his team higher and further, also his offensive numbers were arguably better given he had a lengthy injury.
Cy Young:
NL - Chris Carpenter
AL - Johan Santana
Carpenter walks the NL for me, I can't really see Osswalt or Webb doing as much or putting up his sort of performances night in, night out, and winning so many big games. Hoffman is maybe his biggest competitor but surely it's got to be back to back Cy's for CC?
Santana is just a shoe-in for AL IMO. He's streets ahead of everyone. Honourable efforts from Halladay, Riviera (as usuall) and Verlander notwithstanding. But this is just a no-contest.
Rookie of the Year:
NL - ugly. I think they got it right with Ramirez, though Zimmerman maybe has more star potential in future. Andre Ethier should've got more votes and Chris Duncan could've been a contender if he played all year at 1B for someone (obv. not the cards!)
AL - If Papelbon was fit all year I think he'd walk it. But Verlander is the right choice again I guess. Liriano v unlucky with his injury too.
Thoughts?
