your job is not to move up a spot or two, its to move up to the win where the real money is. why let the big stack take out the short stacks when you can have a great chance to take out both the short stacks and double through the big stack. even if you lose the main pot, you gain money overall winning the side pot where you are 80% to win against him at worse.
Also, don't forget that by taking out the other big stack, you greatly improve your situation by having a big enough stack and no one having a big enough stack to really hurt you. If you fold and let him take the shorties out, true you move up a couple spots but you leave a golden opportunity to hurt the only person that can bust you. That alone greatly increases your chances to move up even more even if you don't have his chips. Just imagine how the situation changes if you have 1.8 million and instead of one guy having 2 million in chips, have him just take that 1.8 million off the table to leave him with 200k. no one gets the chips, just he doesn't have them anymore. How much more do you like your situation now? much better huh?
folding is not only near a bad play, it is a bad play. If the money means that much to you that you are willing to give up in this situation and fold, you should either not be in this tourney if you bought in and if you won in, you should have sold your seat if you desperately need the money.
