I guess you would have to define christian fundamentalist.
The group of Christians that hate gays from an organizational level is so small that it is not even worth talking about. There is nothing in Christianity that teaches people to hate gays (except maybe misusing some passages from the old testament) and you would have a hard time finding any church that is preaching hatred on any group outside of some bizarre white supremist group or those nuts that are protesting at soldiers funerals. But I am not aware of christian cutting off anyones heads in this country in the name of God or Jesus.
Don't confuse not liking homosexual activity or thinking it is sinful to hating gays any more than they hate divorced people or hate people that had sex out of wedlock or committed adultery. You can't call someone a fudamentalist if they are ignoring the fundamentals of a religion.
I also think that Santorum's words are being twisted.
Let me see if I can explain what he meant, because I think I have similar feeling (I really don't know Santorum so I could be off base).
the pursuit of "happiness" can cause some people to take on an extremely short sighted "live for today" attitude where they look for easy gratification and not think about long term consequences. This would include promiscuity, adultery, drug use, alcohol abuse, going to prostitutes and other things that will lead to long term unhappiness and suffering.
A lot of people get stuck in a cycle of "if I only had xx I would be happy" "if only i could have done xx I would be happy" instead of looking at what they have that is good and thinking about what they really want long term and how to get it. The way to happiness is contentment, and one of the surest ways to contentment is through God (or so I say - yes it is an arguable point but that is the point of view Santorum most likely shares).
If you can point out the verses where Jesus says to hate gays I will admit I am wrong.
