Has it been a year already? (with a challenge for you guys)

So, it looks like I registered on BTP exactly one year ago today. Yay! I started with a $50 deposit on UB playing the $.05/$.10 games, and as of right now, my total BR (live and online) sits at $3,977.24. That's all profit, as I withdrew any personal money long ago, and that figure doesn't include the nearly $1000 I took out at the beginning of this year for a new washer and dryer. I am handily beating the $2/$4 games and I'm taking occasional shots at $3/$6.

Not too shabby for a "game of chance", if you ask me. :D

Which brings me to my challenge for the BTP community. All of us know that poker is a game of skill, and indeed most of the sites that are remaining in the US are taking that stance as well. However, I believe that most of the public at large (and certainly the US Congress) views poker as a game of chance. And they're right....

it all comes down to how you define the word "win" as it relates to the game of poker.

If you define "win" to mean winning a particular hand, then poker is a game of chance - with the exception of getting everyone else to fold before showdown, skill plays no part in the outcome of a single hand. Even for a single session, skill doesn't play a large role - we've all seen fish who play like crap and clean house, while we play our A game and still finish in the red.

And yet we still consider poker a game of skill... The problem is that I can't think of a concise (one that could be understood even by legislators) definition of "winning" that would make it clear that poker is indeed a game of skill.

How do you define "winning at poker" in such a way that it's clear to a non-poker player that poker is a game of skill?

I don't want to make it clear to legislators; it's tax free here in UK precisely because it's classed as a game of chance - professional chess players pay tax on winnings I think..

Be glad your opponents refuse to fold; if they didn't, you just might go broke.

Game show riddle (I believe this is what's being referred to)

http://www.marilynvossavant.com/articles/gameshow.html

I love this thing, bizarrely I had a conversation with a taxi driver about this a couple of weeks ago. He started talking about probability when he picked me up from the casino and it went from there.

When I play a patient and relaxed game I win - that simple.
