Great responses, guys. France bashing is so much fun, isn't it? Completely contrary to the realities of French history, of course, but who cares when you can feel superior to someone else?
zmej: I'm sure my French is worse than yours, so I won't even give those articles a shot.
The English article is kind of confusing, isn't it?
It looks to me like France is trying to crack down on the movement of funds in and out of poker sites, and also on online advertising. Like the US government, they have a problem because they're simultaneously funding gambling, so saying "gambling is bad" is a purely hypocritical stance. Unlike the US, they're part of the EU, which thinks it's wrong (contrary to economic fairness across member nations) to let a government stop online operators from competing with domestic operators. If I understand correctly (I'm sure Europeans know way better than I do), the EU has the power to actually stop members from enacting (some kinds of) legislation that is contrary to EU rules.
So, as a wild-ass guess from someone who knows zip about French internal politics, it seems like this ban would be less likely to become effective law in France than the US ban did in America. If it did become law, then how it would actually affect play -- I'm sure nobody in the world knows, any more than anybody is really sure now exactly what effect the US law is going to have, long-term.
EDIT: zmej, as far as I can tell (and speaking as an individual here, not a moderator!), they're not insulting you personally. It's just that with the US losing yet another war, they need to feel better by beating up on another country that once lost a war. It's irritating, but I wouldn't take it personally.
