Yeah, I actually like Beckham, but I just don't really care about his "comeback"; he's not even that old. International football generally sucks balls anyway; when was the last decent major tournament? I'd wager Euro 96 or USA 94; there's not been a decent international tourney since then, and the standard of football is wayyyy lower than top level club matches.

I reckon the top 50 club sides in Europe and South America would all be better than any international side in the world. If AC Milan, Man United, Chelsea or Barcelona were in the world cup I'd reckon they'd be about evens to win it. Thoughts?

I agree that clubs like Milan, Chelsea, Man U and Barca would trounce any national side but it's not like it is a fair matchup. Club teams practise together up to 10 times per week most of the year. National sides are lucky to get a week here and there to get their team together. and only the very biggest national sides (Brazil, Italy, Argentina) can compete on a player basis.

Look at Englands starting eleven. On paper it is the best they've had in ages, still, how many would take a place in Milans or Inters eleven?

Paul Robinsson? Nope. Any attacker? Nope. Terry, Ferdinand and Gerrard would make the cut as would Rooney, Carragher maybe, Lampard maybe, Joe Cole maybe...

Now if England could pick the Milan players on the other hand...

Maldini, Nesta, Gattuso, Seedorf, Kaka, Pirlo, Inzhagi and Gillardino would all claim a place. Basically the goalie is the only one who would have trouble making it.

I agree with some points if not most of the points you make, but not all...
we really should differentiate is it national or league teams we are talking about because we both add it in the mix...

You wrote that "Otherwise he's ordinary - short passes, he doesn't have much pace or the ability to take a defender on, he doesn't set up a lot of goals, tackles reasonably well for an attacking midfielder, and is a so-so crosser."
I disagree with some of this... He doesn't have much pace and the ability to take a defender on is spot on, with the difference that he passes more and doesn't do the unnecessary 1on1's..
He has WAAAY more goal assists then Gerrard.. granted, Lamps is our nr.1 set piece taker Gerrard isn't in L'pool, but that also means that there is a reason why he is.. his crosses are so-so? a lot if not most of his assists come from crosses... and tackles reasonably well? he is the worst tackler out there but still manages to have the number of tackles gerrard does, and he is as you said AM.. although, I put him more as a CM with attacking tendencies..

btw. I dislike ronaldo, although he is an absolutely fabulous player...

and... didn't you say something about the small Scottish team??

Get into fantasy baseball and get a team in our league this year. We've far too few for a proper competitive league this year.
