Figured it had something to do with defending the pawn in the center but I couldn't really see the strong counter.

Thanks

Some of the games that Paul Morphy played were awesome. It has been such a long time since I studied them or played chess regularly that I have forgotten my favorite match that he played but it was really a thing of beauty.

My own debut in our team in the second leauge in Sweden, at the age of 15, and winning.
Still have that one saved, and remember the feeling of anxiety combined with joy when I spotte he combination that would give me the win :-)

Apart from that I was really into the Kasparov - Karpov matches.

And these are 2 of my other favourites, from Tal

I love the classic Byrne-Fischer game. Besides that one:

Kasparov demolishes Karpov's novelty over the board. The weird thing is how 22 moves in, Karpov's pieces are all on the back rank...

Maybe the wildest endgame ever seen in high-level chess.

I remember watching this on TV as the game was played, and being awestruck.

A Ruy Lopez from the World Championship 1986, Kasparov v Karpov, where White decides to abandon his Queenside in pursuit of a brilliant attack on the Black King...
