Controversial Bet?

Postby NorthView » Fri Jun 23, 2006 10:49 am

I've just placed a bet on Equador to beat England in normal time in the next round of the World Cup (at 6-1).

I've never bet against my country before and I do feel mildly odd about it, but not half as bad as I thought I might. In fact to be honest, I feel like a naughty schoolboy sticking his fingers up at the headmaster behind his back. In contrast, I've never bet against my club side, Arsenal, and would never even consider it.

If called upon to justify the bet, I'd say that a) I think it's +EV, b) I'm sick of the English FA and the stream of useless and self-serving managers they appoint, and c) this ramshackle and incompetent organisation has let me down every 2 years now since 1970, and THAT'S A LOT OF LET DOWNS!

I'm interested in other people's views on this. Anyone else laid bets against their home nation? Anyone think it's almost a hanging offence?

When I play a patient and relaxed game I win - that simple.

Where'd u get 6-1?

6-1 on any win (incl. extra time and pens) would be absolutely superb odds.

I already have 20 quid on england exiting in the quarter finals so I don't think I'll be betting on this one.

I'm really not following things closely enough to bet on anything, but 6-1 against England seems fine, and I guess you have to be insanely patriotic in order to pass on a profitable soccer bet against your own country. I'd bet my roll against the Dutch!

Monk, I think he got 6-1 for Ecuador to win in regualtion time.

Betting against your home team does feel a little dirty but fuck it, money is money and if you think you are making a good bet go with it.

I usually tend to not bet against my teams, though in the BTP last man football standing bet, I did get burned betting against my 49ers when they beat the Bucs.
