I think a lot of health problems (malaria, AIDS, malnutrition) could be alleviated somewhat, I think that's what the Bill Gates foundation thing is mostly aiming for. A little bit of investment IN THE RIGHT PLACE would help the third world enormously in terms of healthcare and save millions of lives. The difficult bit is getting it to the right place, and maybe a guy with the connections and wherewithal of Gates would have a better chance than most.
