I can't stand The Jam, never could. Something about those flattened suburban vowels and rubbish he spouted back in the day - stuff like a Small Faces album cover being better than any Picasso, and how everyone should go and vote Tory. An old mate of mine knew him from the days when he used to silkcscreen print Tshirts in Camden, and said he was a right horrible c[]nt. Anyway...

I was expecting to see Mr Thompson make an appearance here, so I'm not disappointed. Not my bag, but it's hard not to appreciate the musicianship and commitment.

You posted Booker White before, and he's a winner, no question. I'm glad you've brought him to a wider audience.

I can't forgive Babybird for You're Gorgeous.

Right, music lovers - for your delectation, I offer:

1 Syd Barrett. I couldn't find any original footage of Himself doing any of his solo stuff, so I thought I'd post this instead - an 18 year old(!) from Syd's home town of Cambridge doing a mighty fine version of Terrapin. I hear Syd's stripped down, simple structures everywhere.

2 Beefheart , what can you say? A stunning mix of European Modernism and old Blues, John Peel said his music was "outside of 'rock n' roll' and more in common with Art with a capital A", and that CB was the "only genius" in pop music.

3 Television - their sound is almost too rich to be true, and Verlaine is one of the great unsung guitar heroes.

4 Sex Pistols. I can't describe the impact they had on the UK, musically and culturally. Within a few months we'd all thrown out our flares and had cut our hair short (unless you were a stupid disco kid). Although I think they had better songs (Holidays In The Sun, Satellite), this one says it all. Released to coincide with Her Majesty's Silver Jubilee, no less. Peerless.

5 Miles and Coltrane. Don't say you don't like jazz until you've heard this. Miles' trumpet playing is probably the saddest sound I've ever heard. This is So What from the Kind Of Blue album.

Okay, here goes.

Monk, I read your rules but I really have to break them.

First off, since drum 'n bass songs don't have videos I'm totally fucked in that regard.

Also annoying that MK omitted Kim Deal but I'm gonna sneak her in, though I can't be bothered to include The Pixies, even though it's my human duty.

Sonic Youth - legends, which they have to be because they've been going for about 26 years. They got Geffen to sign Nirvana. They started off as unlistenable, made more coherent albums (87-96) then started to make instrumental boredom songs until a few years ago when they started to release some decent stuff. Everyone raves about Teenage Riot, which is pretty cool, so that's my main recommendation, though the sound is shitty,
, however Little Trouble Girl is good because Kim Deal is in it and is somewhat different for them
( Honourable mention for Mildred Pierce - )

Wu-Tang Clan - or maybe just mid to late nineties rap. But anyway, I could say that Wu Tangs first album is one the best of it's genre but that put it amongst not much competition IMO. Since The Neptunes appeared rappers now only need to release a couple of hot tracks as singles, get rich, pad out the album.

But I digress, on their debut album they created a masterpiece and this is the songs that got me to buy said masterpiece . It displays their depth when their worst member (Masta Killa) drops the best verse.

And this is another good track from the album

Crossover mid-nineties dance -

Massive Attack:
Goldie:
Bjork:

EDIT - DJ Shadow

I'd include The Prodigy and Portishead in this too as artists who made absolutely classic albums. Some helped popularise their sub genres and some of them invented them.

Notorious B.I.G. - If you don't like rap, you'll have to at least admit that Juicy isn't as bad you think the whole genre is

To be honest, I'm not a huge Biggie fan and Nas probably should have this spot except I wanted to link to these freestyles,
On the street:
And this one is soooo sick (), it's audio from an MC battle contest with Biggie and 2pac on the same stage. Biggie appears about 1:40minutes in. Totally wrecks it, 2pac follows it up and provides conclusive evidence as top why he was never the best of the two.

Boards of Canada - MORE LEGENDS! Their album 'Music has a right to children' is a CLASSIC!

Ignore the video made by a fan . This is decent also
