JJ with lower cards?

Postby AlamedaMike » Wed Aug 03, 2005 7:07 pm

I misplayed this hand, duh. Comments?

First, I did not see the pair on the board. I thouht it was [3c], [2h] - still [Js], [Jd] are hard to play.

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em, $2 BB (9 handed)

MP3 ($76.35)
CO ($200)
Button ($80)
Hero ($263.70)
BB ($151.50)
UTG ($35)
UTG+1 ($153)
MP1 ($307.60)
MP2 ($197.75)

Preflop: Hero is SB with [Js], [Jd].
1 fold, UTG+1 calls $2, 2 folds, MP3 calls $2, 1 fold, Button calls $2, Hero raises to $12, 1 fold, UTG+1 calls $10, MP3 folds, Button calls $10.

Flop: ($40) [8h], [3c], [3h] (3 players)
Hero checks, UTG+1 checks, Button checks.

I usually bet out my over pair to the board. Here I decided to check and see what develops.

Turn: ($40) [Tc] (3 players) Lower than my Jacks.

No one bet the flop so they either had nothing or a monster.

Hero bets $22, UTG+1 calls $22, Button calls $22.

River: ($106) [7d] (3 players) No flush so I feel that it is safe to bet.

Hero bets $30, UTG+1 folds, Button raises to $46,

Humm, only $16 to call.

Hero calls $16.

Final Pot: $198
Main Pot: $198, between Button and Hero. > Pot won by Button ($198).

Results in white below:
Hero has Js Jd (two pair, jacks and threes).
Button has As 3s (three of a kind, threes).
Outcome: Button wins $198.

Although it's good to mix it up occasionley with a check-raise on the flop...dont think this is the situation. JJ needs to be protected.

They way you play it.. when you bet the turn and get cold called twice over...you need to slow down. Most likely someone is holding a monster....what else would they be calling with??

Check and call a small bet on the river...hopefully they're both drawing and missed..still unlikley though.

Agree w/ Kenny's comments (man I'm tired of saying that!).

I definitely bet on the flop though. 1/2 to 2/3 bet. Not that it would have helped win here, but when you got called on that board, you might have been able to slow down. I always want to do my betting on the flop, not the river, especially when I think I'm ahead.

Also, I'd mark my notes that the button will call a X6BB pfr with Axs. That's a -EV long-term move.
