When someone tries to come back at you...

Postby Jossnaz » Sat Feb 24, 2007 7:02 pm

Hello

at some point the others want to come back at me and then i don't know what to do, even if i hit top pair on flop.

I play my usual 6 max games in 25$ NL
I play vpip 25%, and when I play I often raise. I play a lot OTB
Now this is what happens in the beginning

I raise, all fold or one or 2 persons call
flop comes whatever
I lead or bet if checked to
all fold

This happens several times in a row
now the others adjust

I do it again as usual
I sit otb with QJ or 910s whatever
I raise, one caller

flop comes, I hit top pair medium kicker
villain checks
i bet pot
villain reraises, normally minimum
I call
turn whatever
villain leads into me

now what? call him down?
My usual play is to fold top pair here, which is a problem as everybody sees me folding

How to adjust? tighten up extremly as soon as 2nd phase begins?

Then you wait to get paid on your big hands - called changing gears.

Yup...cuz then they'll make plays at you or call you down with sub-standard holdings. When they stop paying you off, you loosen back up.

This is a good theoretical question. Your example is very general, and the proper play in such a situation depends as much on board texture and the image of your opponent as it does on your own image (laggy in this case). My main advice for you would be to vary your cbet frequency. If you pot the flop when checked to 100% of the time after raising pre-flop you become predictable to play against. Smarter opponents will check monsters to you expecting you to build a pot for them. They will also check raise you with air knowing you will have to get rid of a lot of your possible holdings. By sometimes checking behind on the flop you can make yourself much tougher to play against. You will discourage your opponents from going for the check raise if you sometimes take a free card, forcing them to define their hand on a coordinated flop. Top pair middle kicker is a good hand to sometimes check behind, because it has showdown value but you wouldn't want to play a big pot with it.
