What would you do with this set?

Postby TomR » Mon Jul 11, 2005 6:34 pm

Hey guys i have been following the board for a longtime and would like to get your opinions on this hand and what you would have done.

In this hand i have them covered with 225, they each have full buyins of 200. THe only read i have is that MP3 is a fairly tight player with 16 VP%, 4% PFR, No read on button as he just sat down.

Party Poker (10 handed)

Preflop: Hero is MP1 with [4h], [4d].
7 folds.
Hero Calls 2, MP3 calls 2, Button raises to 6, both hero and MP3 call

Flop: [Qs], [4c], [2h] (3 players)
Hero checks, MP3 checks, Button checks.

Turn: [9s] (3 players)
Hero checks, MP3 bets 15, button calls 15, Hero Raises 45, MP3 is All in (176), Button calls All in (176)

Action in now on you what would you do? What do you think each of them has?
Also I know that i should have led with the set which i usually do, but did not this time which put me in a predicament.

with your raise, then a re-raise, then an overcall of the all-in, I'm dumping this set, you may very well be ahead but I can find a better situation to put all my money in than this, it just doesn't seem like the smart thing to do

I'm all in with a set on this board everytime, if you run into a bigger set thats part of poker. If you are beat by a set its most likely 99, its hard to put your opponant on Q's without a preflop raise especially since both players were in middle or late position. This is a perfect board for a set of 4's, if you are going to fold a set on this board than why play small pairs at all.

I disagree Rhound. There was a small raise preflop.

I honestly think one of them has a set...I would probably call in teh heat of the moment...ti's so hard to fold a set...and the pot is so big.

But with this play....ugh...both of them may have higher sets. I really think the button has QQ. MP may have 99. YUCK! [Js][Ts] is another strong possibilty.

I don't blame a call or a fold here. This is a rediclous situation.

There is so much money in the pot...I would call. Especially on Party poker. But would not be suprised to see a higher set.

Hope you called and won.

I agree with Kenny that the button has QQ. This a very rare time that I would fold a set.

My thoughts were that MP3 could have caught a set of nines or that the button had a set of queens. I found it very difficult to think i was in front so i did fold after letting the timer rundown.

I'm glad that alot of you thought this shoul d be folded because that is what i did. This is one of the rare times i have ever folded a set on a board like this, but it felt very fishy to me.

Turns out i would have won because MP3 had 22 for a set of 2's and the button had KK.

I just could not believe that the button did not bet with KK on that flop, because if he had the hand would have played out much differently.

Thanks for the input guys.

Hands like that are why you could NEVER fold a set and still make alot of money. I really thought he had QQ. I think, with that action, he will have QQ enough times to make folding at least neutral EV.

Seeing the result I still think it's a good fold. Button SHOULD have QQ (or an overpair) and MP *must* have a set.

I had them on:
Button: QQ or AA
MP3: 99 (possibly 22)

Since mopst of the time at least once of your opponents will have a higher set (and you're drawing to one out), I really think a call here is very much -EV.

I really have no clue here. It throws me off so much not betting out the set that all of a sudden, I don't know what anyone has.

I also have absolutely no idea why KK doesn't bet the flop??? I guess he's slowplaying...

Well, you already have put $50 in. So it's $150 for you to be all-in, with a pot (not including your $150) of $450. So if you lose 3 times and win once, you break even. You need to win just 1 time in 4.

I think you win this 1 time in 4. Set over set over set is so rare you can just ignore it. That means one of the other guys has a set and the other guy doesn't. You will be ahead 1 time in 3 (set of 2s you're ahead; set of 9s or set of Qs you're behind).

In the heat of the moment I probably fold, but thinking about it you should probably push.

I don't think I have ever folded a set on a board with no obvious straight or flush possibilities. I would call here. I agree, the way the button played it looks like QQ, but I will still pay to see it. Maybe that's a leak!

I dont see why everyone is so convinced that MP must have a set here, 99 is a possibilty I will give you that. There is no way he has QQ, why would you limp call with QQ preflop with the raisor having position on you, and then check with it on the flop when you hit your set. There are many hands that dont beat you, i have seen players do this with AQ, Q9 or J10 even As Ks is an option. The only hands that have you beat are QQ and 99, QQ seems to be less likely here but still a possibilty.

Tom I dont understand your last comment, if the button had bet the flop how would this be any different??? He bets you call/ raise, MP3 pushs all in, and KK calls all in and now its to you. I dont see how this is any different.

My personal philosophy is I am willing to put my stack in everytime with a set on a board like this, if I run into a bigger set well so be it, thats what I have a bankroll for.

I think the people were convinced the BUTTON had QQ; not the MP. At least I thought so.

Am I the only one wondering why he didnt bet into the raiser with a set?!?!? I am not super aggressive but at least throw something out there; build that pot on the flop! This will help you get paid off/find out where you are in the hand. I can understand a slow play here since the board isnt that draw heavy, but in no way shape or form am I not betting into the raiser with a set. Especially the circumstances how likely is KK to play back at you?!
