Was there a better way to play this? The old set under set

Postby Drade » Mon Aug 01, 2005 4:14 pm

The table was playing so straight forward and passive, when the BB re-raised the min raiser, I put him on a big hand. On the flop I had no intention of folding and I thought he'd probably call with aces or kings, which is why I pushed. Obviously he'd also call with queens.

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em, $0.50 BB (8 handed)

SB ($11.55)
BB ($66.60)
UTG ($30.40)
UTG+1 ($49.75)
Hero ($58.55)
MP2 ($37.45)
CO ($45.40)
Button ($20.35)

Preflop: Hero is MP1 with [6h], [6d].
UTG calls $0.50, 1 fold, Hero calls $0.50, MP2 calls $0.50, 1 fold, Button raises to $1, 1 fold, BB raises to $4, UTG folds, Hero calls $3.50, MP2 folds, Button calls $3.

Flop: ($13.25) [Qs], [6s], [7d] (3 players)
BB bets $12, Hero raises to $54.55, Button folds, BB calls $42.55.

Turn: ($122.35) [9s] (2 players)

River: ($122.35) [7h] (2 players)

Final Pot: $122.35

Results in white below:
BB has Qh Qc (full house, queens full of sevens).
Hero has 6h 6d (full house, sixes full of sevens).
Outcome: BB wins $122.35.

Plus I think it's hard to believe the preflop raiser would flop top set with no other paint cards and then bet near the whole pot, he could hardly put either of you on aces or kings. You're just unlucky that you flopped one other 2 realistic hands he would be up against.

Make a note that this guy is so ABC it hurts, when exactly would he check raise?

I will bet close to the full pot with a set but I will also bet the full pot with a missed AK. It depends on the style I think. Also, there are straight possibilities (not too likely against a raise) and a flush draw. The BB reraised preflop so if the Button had something like AQ, AA or KK (that he didn't reraise preflop), he could easily stack someone by betting full pot on the flop as people with those hands might feel compelled to reraise.
