Tough hand, opinions seeked...

Postby Ricardooon » Thu Sep 08, 2005 3:09 pm

This one popped up today. I am going to post everything till my ulitmate river play since I would like to know thoughts untainted by the results. No reads, got about 16 hands on the bad guy and he has done nothing odd yet.

AQs, AK, KK, and QQ are possible preflop, with AQs (spades), AK and KK making sense by the turn and only AQ spades, QQ, or a bluff making sense by the river.

I never know what to do with these 2:1 calling situations, but historically I tend to call and lose my stack... I hope that didn't happen to you.

Okay you have an OESD but its on a flush board which I guess is not too relavant since you are HU with someone with a big pfr.

Flop-- I personally don't like the 1/2ish pot sized bet because I get no information on my opponent. Just about everyone calls that and you know an overpair will call that.

Turn--I prefer to check here. You are pretty much behind so why escalate the pot? A good player should be blasting your 1/2 pot sized bet if he has AA or KKK. and then you are done.

River--I like the bet which screams to be reraised which it was. I don't really fear AQ here.

Once the K comes, your hand is no longer a true OESD because half of your OESD loses to a different one-card straight. So I'm not betting the turn here.

8 times out of 10 he has a Q to make that play on the river. So I want to fold.

But I have a hard time putting him on a hand that makes any sense, though. QQ should reraise the flop. AQ should fold the flop. [EDIT: missed AQ of spades, that would make sense.] QJ and lower shouldn't raise big preflop. KQ has a gutshot only on the flop ... maybe that's worth calling with, to some people?

I do not know what to do. In the heat of the moment, I would fold because I take it for granted that people can tell when there are TWO four-card straights on the board and won't push all-in without one of them.

On the other hand, your hand is well disguised because of your bets. He could put you on two pair or a low set and think his set of Js or Ks is good.

I called.

Bad guy had AQs.

Bugger.

I am pleased at least that the consesus seems to be with me. It was a shame there was no read though unless he was a rock I was always likely to make that play.

My turn bet was a calculated risk. I figure that unless the K has improved him big time I am unlikely to get raised. Also my play gives little info on my hand so I might have anything from AA to a set, two pair or a draw. It would be tough for him to raise me and if he does have AK he might be willing to showdown cheap. I really want to see this river card for my draw (ironic eh?) so by betting I am pricing myself for my draw. I check I invite a bet I cannot call. It is something I do sometimes when the board has intrigue in it and it has worked for me most times...
