This sucks - Play it differently?

Enjoy - I didn't. Should I have bet the turn? Folded the river?

You shouldn't have let him catch quads. That was your first mistake.

But aside from that, that's about as perfect as you can play it.

Problem is... if you bet the turn, he's gonna call... then where do you stand... not sure if I would've called the river when it paired, but that's probably hindsight talking, and I probably would've called...

You played it fine. You lost as little as possible to a set (quads). You have to call the river especially after checking the turn. I make lots of money from checking the turn and then letting them bluff their missed flush draw.

Since you have the flush draw I think you can bet the turn if you want or check it depending on the opponent. In this case if you check the turn and hit the flush, hes going to bet the river thinking you have nothing and he'll call your raise with his set.

I can see betting the turn also, but of course hes going to raise with the set and you have to call...or even push all in.

Thanks for the replies guys -

My opponent in this hand was a reasonable player. I wasnt scared of him having a straight - there was no way he had a hand that contained a 3. I was sure that had one of three hands - Flush draw, AK, or a set. Since I held two spades and an Ace, I put him on a set. I was seriously debating folding this unimproved, but I rather liked the 4 on the river. Instead of 6 possibilities for the set, there were only 4 now. The fact that he hit quads goated me into calling. Sort of ironic, or something.

Question for Iceman (or someone else who understands the game):

Suppose Droqqa would have bet the turn, say he would have bet $250 - $300. You say he has to call a raise there? Why? Aren't you clearly beaten then and only drawing to 9 outs for a flush?

Depends on the size of the raise and stack sizes of course. But I like chekcking the turn better when you have all the flush outs. You have to assume the other guy isnt chasing the flush so either he has AQ or a set most times.

I think you played it about right, you used position to your advantage, and a set or beat flush draw is likely. You opponent however I think should have given you the stop and go for half pot to full pot on the turn, and made the perfect lead on the river.

Wow I had the exact same hand happen this week, albeit at lower stakes. This should make you feel better about your play. Opponent is pretty solid by NL100 standards.

Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em, $ BB (6 max, 6 handed)

MP ($108.45)
CO ($148.2)
Hero ($157.71)
SB ($66.25)
BB ($77.94)
UTG ($76.35)

Preflop: Hero is Button with [Ks], [Ad]. SB posts a blind of $0.5.
UTG calls $1, MP calls $1, 1 fold, Hero raises to $5, 2 folds, UTG calls $4, MP calls $4.

Flop: ($16.50) [4h], [8s], [Kc] (3 players)
UTG checks, MP checks, Hero bets $13, UTG calls $13, MP folds.

Turn: ($42.50) [4c] (2 players)
UTG checks, Hero bets $25, UTG calls $25.

River: ($92.50) [2h] (2 players)
UTG calls $33.35 (All-In), Hero calls $33.35.

Final Pot: $159.20

Results in white below:
UTG has 4s 4d (four of a kind, fours).
Hero has Ks Ad (two pair, kings and fours).
Outcome: UTG wins $159.20.

My river call is horribe b/c I knew he had a set much less quads. I was mid-tilt at the time. Enjoy.

I'm shocked SB didn't raise the turn with the coordinated board, but he probably had the same read (no 3 in hand given preflop action)

He also called a raise on a small PP, not what i would generally do.....Nice river bet, 250 reeks of a missed draw.
