to slowplay or not to slowplay

Postby euri10 » Mon May 02, 2005 9:22 am

this is not a particular hand and you'll tell me : it depends !

my interrgoation today is to know if slowplaying a monster that you hit on the flop is a profitable play in the long term.

franckly I was really enclined to slowplay that kind of stuff, I mean trips of flopped str8/flush when I played more regulary NLHE 1 year ago.

After an Omaha break I must admit I think quite the contrary. So yes I know it's bad to slowplay at Omaha but I wonder if it's not the case in NLHE also.

My arguments for that are thin but not fancy.
My main argument for not slowplayiong a monster on the flop is that : if you bet pot on the flop and get called, you can trap your opponents on later streets, that is check raise the turn, overbetting the river, maximazing your gans should not be a problem and you can in case things go wrong release your hand for a higher price than if you had slowplayed it but for an unfair price for your opponent.
if you slowplay it, basically you have no information about what your opponents have, and the only hands that will acll you on later streets are drawing hands that improved so there's nothing to gain on it !

I realize that a lot of online player slowplay a lot !
maybe my trip to Vegas with so many limpers explains also why I'm changing my mind but do you slowplay for what ?
I cried because I had no draw, until I met a man with no pair>>>MVSPORTS

I think a lot of this depends on the table and your opponents. If everyone is tight you almost have too slow play so they can catch up.

I vary my play. Sometimes I make a small bet to appear weak but usually smarter players figure that trap out. Most often times i just bet it out like I would any normal hand. I figure if my opponent won't call the flop, they most likely won't call any other streets. Besides in the case of big quads or a big set you most likely raised pre-flop anyway, checking in my mind raises a flag. I almost always take notice when someone raises pre-flop and then checks the flop. The first thing I think is that the flop hit them between the eyes. A lot of times that isn't the case but I think that regardless

Slowplaying is at your own risk. If you decide to slowplay a monster, remember that flopped trips is not good enough. A flopped straight is ok, if there's a rainbow down, and if you have the nut straight (and the high end at that).

Quads? Slowplay away. A royal or a straight flush? Go ahead. Even beware slowplaying boats when you have the little end.

Slowplaying is a great way to win a big pot if you do have a true monster, but remember that if you slowplay, and someone sucks out on you, remember that you have no right to complain! :D

Slowplay with caution.

As an aside, I've become the pioneer of the "checking a nut-flush" slowplay. Especially when you flop it. Just beware the board pairing. No pairs, no lose (unless somehow they end up with a straight flush)

Bet Big Win Big!!!

I don't slowplay all that often, I like to be hammering anyways. Slow playing for me with less than nut boat or quads is rare. If I bet and they fold so be it, I might make less than pot sized bet, but generally always make a bet, last thing I need is to have no clue about the strength of their hand and the action gets heavy after a free card that could have filled a gutshot.
