Should I make a play at this guy

Postby GooperMC » Thu Sep 08, 2005 2:29 pm

Party $25 tables, everyone has full stacks.

I am OTB with [3c] [3d]. Someone in MP raises to $1, I call, BB re-raises to $3, MP calls, I call.

Flop [Qc] [Qd] [2s]: BB bets $2 into a $10 pot, MP folds, Hero ????

This is the 1st hand that the BB has played so I have no read on him.

2 questions:
1) Do you call the re-raise?
2) Do you raise that flop?

I like a smooth call and make a play at the turn if he checks more than a reraise now, if I'm going to run a play. I find that the turn is often more believable to them than raising faux trips on the flop.

This is one of the few instances that you will get current 6:1 direct odds to take one off the top with a missed low pair, in the hopes he has AK or can be out played later or that you might very well spike your 3 and be able to get the 22:1 implied odds for an even money play. If he does hold the Q, especially AQ you will get his stack and assuming it is deep enough you can consider getting creative, in which case you might have made a bad choice attempting to run a play and should note his underbet as strength for future reference. So I think with the possiblity of holding the best hand, being able to get good implied odds, and outplay your opponent on the turn if he makes another weak bet or check you at least take one off the top and see how it develops if you feel like playing a tougher pot than necessary.

You could make a case for folding it preflop unless you're *sure* the re-rasier has AA and that he can't fold it.

Post flop I suggest folding since that weak lead may be a broken wing act. I suggest saving your "moves" for when the opponent is weak. You're calling $2 to win $32 giving you 1:15 which isn't enough for you since you're only 2:45 to hit your set, and that is assuming he will pay off with his whole stack.
