Shorthanded to full ring game?

Postby Dumb Snowman » Sat Apr 30, 2005 4:26 pm

Hey guys, I'm trying to move from my usual short-handed games to some full ring, but my problem is, I can't seem to tighten up!

What hands should a player who plays well post-flop be trying to play from each position?
What hands do you call in the small blind?
What hands are clear raising hands vs. clear calling hands?

Thank ya very much!

I'll give it a shot as I have slight experience in both.

What hands should a player who plays well post-flop be trying to play from each position?

From early position it doesn't really matter how good you play post-flop, so I'd say tight is right. Shorthand A-10 and A-J are fairly strong hands, but they are just trouble from EP in a full game. From MP depending on the amount of folds in front of me etc. I'll open up to high suited connectors, as well as even just some broadways. If I'm two or three away from the button I may even raise which will accomplish two things. 1) I may just buy the blinds or buy position (getting people behind me to fold hands like J10o or other hands that are sometimes limpable in LP), and 2) if anyone reraises its a pretty easy fold, and if anyone calls I know to proceed with caution. From LP I try and limp into pots that if I hit I take stacks. For example, 4 limpers in front of me while I'm on button (not too uncommon for lower limits) I'll play suited connectors 5/6 up and even sometimes 9/10 off. Only big thing is I try to avoid hands that I can be dominated against that would be tough for me to lay down if I hit. I'd rather see Ax suited behind a bunch of limpers than KJ anyday, because even if I hit my ace I can let it go where as if I hit my J its much tougher with KJ.. I'm kind of new to posting as well, and most of my knowledge may sound like a broken record of others, because mainly it is..

What hands do you call in the small blind?

Against numerous opponents I avoid hands like Ax off, K/9 off, basically on down. Anything that can cost me a lot of money if I hit a second best hand. With a bunch of limpers and you out of position there isn't much you can do to find out the strength of your hand. Ugh, I hate the SB.

What hands are clear raising hands vs. clear calling hands?

I can't think of a real clear cut answer for this.. I don't mind raising 4x the BB with suited connectors in LP, but other times these hands are limping hands. It all depends on how you play, the more aggressive you are the more hands you'll be raising. I kind of hate to not have control of a hand (which could be a great fault), so usually I'll try and take the lead.. usually if I am the first one in the pot it will be for a raise, but that is self explanatory.

Some useful tips for shorthanded to full...

Tight play is better, in a shorthanded game Q9 doesn't look so bad on the button, but usually in a full game that hand hits the muck very fast for me. The limp-reraise tactic from EP is very good for premium pairs at a full table, but at a shorthanded table you usually need to raise it up reguardless of where you are.

Hope that I could be some help, I'm sure I will be corrected by others and look forward to hearing about it (helps you as well as me)
