Setting up the table to get paid off

Postby MTPaid » Tue Sep 18, 2007 9:45 pm

This is $50 FR, but I didn't put it in the title because I think the situation applies to any game.

Part 1: The Setup
At the FR tables which are usually weak/tightish on Full Tilt, I like to open up to try and establish a looser image so I'll play a few more hands than normal for the first 25 hands or so before tightening up. During this time, I'll also usually steal a lot of pots before they start playing back, which is when I usually tighten up.

I'm only in my 2nd orbit around the table.
[Qs][Js] UTG+2 Full $50 stack
I open-limp, MP2 (no read - has me covered) raises to $2.25, everyone folds, I call

[9d][9s][Ts] Pot $5.25
I check, MP2 bets $3.50, I c/r all-in.
MP2 takes the full amount of time, folds and a short conversation took place afterward:

MP2: nice bluff
Me: ty, but why would you fold to a bluff?
MP2 : over bet the pot like that
MP2: for all I know maybe you had a 9 in your hand
Me: lol maybe

I rarely get the chance to take advantage of a situation like this so soon afterwards, but just a few hands later......

[Js][Jd] BB w/ $55
MP2 open-raises to $2, everyone else folds

Note: MP2, in addition to seeing my push a few hands earlier, has also seen me be aggressive at another table too. He's running at 18/13, average post-flop aggression, 30 WTSD over close to 100 hands against. A lot of the time I'd 3-bet JJ here, but considering his stats and how LAGish I'd been so far, I decided just to call here and see what the flop looked like.

[3s][Jc][Ks] Pot $4.25

Considering what he'd seen me do already just a few hands earlier at this table, and consdiering his 30 WTSD (which to me means he tends to have a little trouble folding top pair type hands or overpairs and probably often thinks he's getting bluffed) what's the right move here?

Play the hand fast on the flop just like your draw earlier.

For what its worth I do the reverse, I play tight when I first sit down to establish a solid image, then really loosen up and apply lots of pressure from late position, eventually once players start to play back at me ill then tighten up once more.

A steady stream of chips is available to the player with an image that is tigher than they really are.

Lead into him for $4 or you coul dtry another CRAI and see if calls this one. As it could look like QTs, AJs, andy 2 spades. Thats a REAL draw happy flop. I would play it safe and lead into him and hope he raises. Then in she goes.
2008 Goals:

1. Make $40K by year end.
2. Play at least 100hrs a month.
3. Read 5-10 new Poker Books w/ notes.
4. Become regular at $2/$4 FR
5. Try some $5/$10 FR
6. Work on Game non-stop.
