set of jacks facking a mini raise on the river

Postby kennyg » Thu Aug 11, 2005 1:58 am

1/2 NL

I've got a good read on my opponent. He loves to make big bets after preflop raises. If he bets..it's usually big..good hand or crap hand. great to flop a set against :)

I'm dealt [Js][Jd] UTG. I limp. One limper. He raises to $7 from the cutoff. Me and the other limper call.

FLOP$24
[Jc][2h][7h]

I check, limper checks. Opponent (preflop raiser) bets $17. I call. limper folds

TURN $58
[Jc][2h][7h][As]

I check. He checks. uhoh.

RIVER $58
[Jc][2h][7h][As][4d]

I bet $30...trying to look like a missed flush draw. He mini raises to $60 fairly quickly. uhoh . I have about $150 behind me.

Call or reraise? if reraise...how much??

results later.

If he's not a very good player he probably has AJ or less likely AK/AQ so raising him would be good. If you really have a reason to suspect he's got AA (which I don't see), then maybe call. But I'd raise like 99% of the time - given that the pot is bigger than your stack - all in.
If he really got AA and didnt raise the turn with it, then he's an idiot. Since you called his flop bet, you're probably gonna call the turn bet too, I mean he's gotta hope you have AJ or a set in which case you're gonna call the turn bet and if you don't he's just risking losing to the flush by giving you a free card. Fancy play syndrome.. :D

I push. I don't think he hit a draw so you're really only behind AA. So be it if you lose set over set.

Why "uh oh"?? You have shown no real strength at all. His minraise only says that he thinks he can beat the weakness you're repping. 35 and AA are all that beat you. Push.

Kenny what are you afraid of here, he doesnt have AA. If he did why would he check behind on the turn. He has postion and he needs to build a pot so that he can get the rest of your money on the river. The only other thing that has you beat is 35 and this guy raised preflop. I think he has Ax possibly, 2 pair, the only question is how to get the most value out of your set.

i push. If its AA, oh well but I think an all in will look suspicious enough that he may call with weaker hands than if you just raised.

I reraised to $150. I should have moved all in but I was 5-tabling and didn't get enough time to think about ti. (lol maybe i shouldbn't be playing 5 tables.)

He ended up calling though and I won..and looking through later I expected AK. But all he had was A3o. He called pretty quickly too.
