Questioning my laydown on this hand...

Postby smackinyaup » Tue Apr 12, 2005 3:36 pm

This is probably a bad first impression, but it wouldnt help anybody if I just posted flopped monsters...I feel like I misplayed this hand, but Im not sure where I made the biggest mistake.

The villain here limped in with about every hand Ive observed so far (which isnt too many), called a lot, and hadnt raise a single time yet.

I knew I was taking a risk slowing down on the turn but I was hoping to look weak so that he'd raise me - (mistake 1 - hes passive!). On the river the one suit I didnt want fell, but I wasnt too worried so I only bet 8 expecting him to call, pot slide my way, end of story. When he re-raised me for $33 I had to think that he either flopped a set or hit his flush because Ive never seen him raise anything so far

what happened here?

Ha, he thought he took a bad beat a few hands later, got mad and went all in a couple times for $30. I called him the 3rd with KQs and busted his ass. But still...what happened on that hand?

I don't slow down on the turn. I keep the pressure on. Assuming you are ahead there, all you are doing is giving a cheap card to someone that will give you action on the river if he beats you. If he has the K, he's calling or raising anyway.

On the river, that weak bet is asking for a raise. I likely would have checked and called a reasonable bet. However, since i would have pushed harder on the turn, he wouldn't have enough money left for me not to call pretty much.

I'm not an experienced shorthanded player but that's my take.

Yea, youre completely right...i guess I over valued my hand. I didnt have him on much of a hand so I bet a smallish amount just hoping he wouldnt fold. I have to admit that his all-in reraise was quite unexpected so I folded and figured I could find a spot where I didnt feel so iffy with my money in the middle...

Dont underbet the turn like that. You already know that.

Also, dont bet that river especially when you underbet the turn. Check the river and if/when he bets you need to decide to call or not based on the amount of the bet and your read.

Alot of guys will bluff that river (without a flush) if you check to them.
