Pushing It

Postby 80Proof » Thu Aug 04, 2005 9:07 pm

This relates to Trodgers post 'To Draw or not to draw'.....I am posting seperately as I did not want to hijack...

In regards to Ice's advice...At lower stakes or even mid stakes.....how often would you use the push? To me it would seem at the lowest of the low stakes it would be a bad idea as your opponent is probablly not capable of making the laydown. Thoughts? As stakes increase or as skill increases, how often would one use this tactic?

Reason I ask is that I recently had this hand come up....

Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em, $ BB (9 handed)

saw flop|saw showdown

SB ($37.10)
BB ($31.96)
UTG ($25.30)
UTG+1 ($12)
80 ($24.35)
MP2 ($23)
MP3 ($22.94)
CO ($27.50)
Button ($16.35)

Preflop: 80 is MP1 with [Kc], [Ah]. SB posts a blind of $0.10.
UTG raises to $0.5, UTG+1 calls $0.50, 80 raises to $2, MP2 calls $2, 3 folds, SB (poster) calls $1.90, 1 fold, UTG calls $1.50, UTG+1 folds.

Flop: ($8.75) [5h], [Qc], [6h] (4 players)
SB bets $3, UTG calls $3, 80 calls $3, MP2 folds.

I call here b/c...well, I dont know. I figured UTG has a flush draw and I figure the SB for a Q so I have 2 overs. Hind site:....fold or raise is the play.

Turn: ($17.75) [8s] (3 players)
SB checks, UTG checks, 80 checks.

I check here but thought long and hard about pushing. Given the play up to now they can not be that strong right? They are drawing or weak right? I checked b/c I had no draw and no pair. I am done w/ this hand at this point. Correct Play???

River: ($17.75) [Jh] (3 players)
SB bets $5, UTG folds, 80 folds.

Looks like he made his flush to me. Thoughts?

Final Pot: $22.75

I think that if he was on the flush draw and UTG did have a weak Q then I could have pushed the SB off of his draw. Not sure about UTG though. Many will call w/ top pair no kicker at these levels. Should I still push 'em?

What are your thoughts on this hand and low stakes push moves as a bluff or semi bluff in general?

Thanks.

fold or raise the flop depending on your read on him but leaning to fold. don't try to push people off too many hands likes this on party no limit tables because it will just lose you money. Just fold the flop.
