Push a big draw

Postby iceman5 » Thu Apr 21, 2005 1:55 pm

$2/$4 NL

UTG+1 raises to $12. He raises fairly light. Ive seen him raise to 412 several times with AJ, KJs type hands.

Its folded to me in the BB with [Th][9h]. I call figuring this is the right guy to be able push hard with a draw since even if he has top pair, his kicker is liable to be weak and I doubt he'll call all in. So I call. We both started with about $425.

Pot is $26. The flop comes [Kh][6h][7s]. I have a flush draw and gutshot.

I check, he bets $15 and then I check rasie to $45. He thinks and reraises to $140. I push all in.

What do you think about the play in general (12 outs if he calls) and what do you think my folding equity is?

I think in this situation, you pegged him right, top pair with a weak kicker. I dont think you have much folding equity in this situation, however, after he reraises your check raise.

In these situations, I like to lead out at the pot with a pot-sized bet, and reraise if raised. What happens if he smooth calls your checkraise and a blank comes out on the turn? I'm not sure, just some ideas.

I like the play and make it frequently. Not sure if he'll fold or not (highly doubt it but certainly possible if he does indeed have a KQ/KJ type hand), but given 12 outs twice, the pot is big enough at this point to cover your odds if called. Play this eactly like a set -- would you just call the reraise here given the stacks, pot, draws? No, you'd push. So push your draw too. Next time, you'll have the set :)

I like this play a lot, my guess is he has AK, if he is bad enough to call you with TPTK, than you are pretty much a coin flip, if he folds you win a nice pot without having to hit your draw. Also by just calling you are putting yourself in a tough postion if you miss the turn, if you check he is probably not going to check behind you, and you are going to have to call a sizeable bet with an underdog. The only hand you are a sizable underdog in this hand is a set or a bigger flush draw with a pair.
