That was painful, but I'm not sure how easily you could have folded that later either. If he bet out you would have raised and possibly got all in by the end enyway, unless maybe another flush card hit.

Set over set is always painful, but you make so much money playing it fast other times that it's hard to argue in favor of something else.

My first point is that an overpair like the AA example is very different than bottom set, with bottom set you are way ahead of two pair, on this flop that ice is talking about it might not be but with a flop like QJ4 there is a huge difference between bottom set and AA.

And to Alex and Aisthesis you are saying that it isnt that bad a move because someone with two pair might call you. What better situation can you ask for when you flop a set is for someone else to flop 2 pair. You are going to take most of their money either way so what is the advantage of making this huge overbet, if you fold them even once you lose money. Plus even better someone turns two pair or trips and you get money from someone who would have folded to the flop all-in.

This is a moronic play and this guy got very lucky that he ran into someone else who had a very strong hand too, most of the time this is just throwing away a great money making opportunity.

I call. I agree with the others, the guy is a dork. He can't put you on a lower set. If he was certain that he could put you on AA this might be a nice play for him to make.

I came close to folding lowest set the other day. Real close. Flop came Q43, checked to the preflop raiser who bets weak, I make a big raise with my 33, and the UTG guy that limped goes all-in. I just managed to talk myself into that he would limp QQ and then not re-raise preflop. Of course he had QQ and I ended up with egg on my face

One day I will learn to fold a set... one day...

Oh, and I obviously call in the original example as well. :)

He played pretty tight so i didnt see many hands. I doubled up with a different set and then had to leave.

I'll be looking for him in the future for sure.

An additonal reason this is an easy call is this. Put yourself in the other players shoes.

I raise (or reraise I forget) preflop and get called. I flop top set on a junk board. I want to make money (this is where the assumption might not be correct looking at this player the way he played the hand). To make a lot of money with the nuts I need to either get all in now or play in such a way to have my opponent continue to put money in the pot or to induce him to put money in the pot on a later street.

I think: What does my opponent have? Does he have QQ, KK, AA? Does he have AK, AQ? Does he have a mid pair? Hmm...If he has AA KK QQ he will be interested in putting in some money, possibly all in right now. If he has AA he will be the most willing to do it. If he has KK and I push all in he may very well be scared of AA and fold. If he has AK or AQ he may call a pot size bet or bluff the turn if I check or... but he most likely won't call an all in so... It would be sweet if he hit a set but the chances are slim...

So unless I can put opponent on AA or a smaller set I am not going to go all in. I will not get paid off at all. Only an idiot would call with some hand other than those 3 hands.

The range of hands I can put my opponent on are not that narrow so I have to play more cagey.

Maybe I bet pot, maybe I check it through, maybe I.... but my main concern is keeping my opponent in the hand at this point (unless I find out he has AA or a smaller set FIRST, then I can shoot for the stars). If he has a big hand I will find out.

So I bet pot or 1/2 pot or check it through. I do not want to drive out my opponent. I have the best hand possible here. Of course if it is some rank amateur who is deathly afraid of losing this $15.00 pot when an A K or Q fall on the turn giving the opponent a better hand where I loose my stack then I go all in, but that is an absurd play. I don't think many players would bet more than the pot here for these reasons.

Call me weak/tight, but I instantly clicked fold on this one and expected to see Ice say he had 88.

I don't agree with his bet there, amount wise, but it screamed "i have a set and want to protect against a flush draw" to me.

I would definitely bet the pot on that flop, and hit the pot again on the turn if called.

If there is a betting pattern where I'm willing to fold instead of going broke in a set-over-set situation ... especially with no reads ... this is not it. I call every time.

digital -- try translating the bets to the stakes you play at, so that the absolute size of the bet isn't affecting your decision.

I of course voted to call...

But I started thinking about how interested I was in hearing about---

1. What do you do if he had bet 2/3s the pot??

2. or Pot and a half??

3. or a milder overbet like 3X the pot??

Interesting ----------
