An additonal reason this is an easy call is this. Put yourself in the other players shoes.
I raise (or reraise I forget) preflop and get called. I flop top set on a junk board. I want to make money (this is where the assumption might not be correct looking at this player the way he played the hand). To make a lot of money with the nuts I need to either get all in now or play in such a way to have my opponent continue to put money in the pot or to induce him to put money in the pot on a later street.
I think: What does my opponent have? Does he have QQ, KK, AA? Does he have AK, AQ? Does he have a mid pair? Hmm...If he has AA KK QQ he will be interested in putting in some money, possibly all in right now. If he has AA he will be the most willing to do it. If he has KK and I push all in he may very well be scared of AA and fold. If he has AK or AQ he may call a pot size bet or bluff the turn if I check or... but he most likely won't call an all in so... It would be sweet if he hit a set but the chances are slim...
So unless I can put opponent on AA or a smaller set I am not going to go all in. I will not get paid off at all. Only an idiot would call with some hand other than those 3 hands.
The range of hands I can put my opponent on are not that narrow so I have to play more cagey.
Maybe I bet pot, maybe I check it through, maybe I.... but my main concern is keeping my opponent in the hand at this point (unless I find out he has AA or a smaller set FIRST, then I can shoot for the stars). If he has a big hand I will find out.
So I bet pot or 1/2 pot or check it through. I do not want to drive out my opponent. I have the best hand possible here. Of course if it is some rank amateur who is deathly afraid of losing this $15.00 pot when an A K or Q fall on the turn giving the opponent a better hand where I loose my stack then I go all in, but that is an absurd play. I don't think many players would bet more than the pot here for these reasons.
