QQ overpair against a raise on the turn...

Postby stickdude » Thu Nov 17, 2005 12:28 pm

Here's a hand from last night that I think I could have played better, but I wanted some other opinions.

Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em, $ Hero (10 handed)

MP3 ($2.40)
CO ($4.90)
Button ($8.22)
SB ($5.20)
Hero ($5.66)
UTG ($6.21)
UTG+1 ($3.91)
UTG+2 ($8.63)
MP1 ($8.22)
MP2 ($7.53)

Preflop: Hero is BB with [Qs], [Qc]. SB posts a blind of $0.02.
1 fold, UTG+1 calls $0.04, UTG+2 calls $0.04, 1 fold, MP2 calls $0.04, MP3 calls $0.04, CO calls $0.04, 1 fold, SB (poster) completes, Hero raises to $0.16, UTG+1 folds, UTG+2 calls $0.16, MP2 calls $0.16, MP3 calls $0.16, CO calls $0.16, SB folds.

So, a 4xBB raise didn't scare too many people away...

Flop: ($1.08) [4c], [9d], [5h] (5 players)
Hero bets $0.5, UTG+2 folds, MP2 folds, MP3 folds, CO calls $0.50.

We'll try a 1/2 pot bet then, which worked a little better

Turn: ($2.08) [Jc] (2 players)
Hero bets $1.5, CO raises to $3, Hero ????

I've still got the overpair, so let's ratchet up the bet and see what happens...

And he raises me?? Could he have been smooth-calling with a pair of Jacks all this time? Did he have AJ and think he just spiked TPTK? Is he an idiot who just got a lucky 2-pair? If I call, we'll both have about $1.50 left in our stacks with an $8 pot.

push in, you won't drive him off his hand at this level. Mostl likely he has J9 or something

at this level you really have to bust the people who think you have AK and they called you with AJ and now they have top pair

Not much else you can do
if you call this bet you need to call a push on the river, no sense in letting him catch any more cards

I think you maybe are beat here but this hand personifies this level of play, everyone sees the flop and generally you will lose with your overpairs when 5 people call your raise pre-flop

edit: also I bet the pot on the flop, not half the pot. you need to drive people out of this hand. if you bet half the pot and the first two people call, then they all call

eh, i think you're toast. i would fold, he's not afraid of you. if you want to play, i wouldn't push, i would call the turn and check/call the river.

the 4x pf raise was the problem...i'm thinking 12x at least. you're up against 6(!) players and you're out of position. also bet more on the flop, that's a pretty safe board.

if this was higher stakes, looks like a classic set. on these low limits, eh..i push it in and jope for the best. people suck to much to fold an overpair :)

So, after thinking about it for a few seconds, and based on the way I've people play at this level with TPTK, I decided that AJ was his most likely hand, and so I called. Usually, if they have a set or two pair here, they'll push more often or not, and I probably would have folded to a push here.

What I'm still going back and forth on is whether or not I should have pushed after his raise, since we're basically both pot-committed anyway.

Turn: ($2.08) [Jc] (2 players)
Hero bets $1.5, CO raises to $3, Hero calls $1.50.

But, on to the next street...

River: ($8.08) [Kd] (2 players)
Hero ????

Yuck! Definitely not a card I wanted to see. However, of the three cards I really didn't want to see here (A, K, or J), this is probably the least dangerous. If a Jack hits, I'm definitely out of there, as I have no doubt he has the set. An Ace hits, and it comes down to how strongly I put him on AJ. But, for some reason I think KJ is a lot less likely than AJ.
