$2 into a $80 pot

Postby iceman5 » Thu May 12, 2005 9:11 am

$1/$2NL at Prima

I raise to $10 with AK UTG+1 ...cutoff and the BB call.

Pot is $30. The flop is 942 with 2 clubs. BB checks and I fire out $25. Cutoff folds but the BB calls. UGH

Pot is $80. The turn is another 4. The BB now leads out $2. HUH? He has $75 left.
What do you do?

I don't think you can't fold to this bet.

if he's on a club draw he likely would have min bet the flop instead of the turn, as that's the more typical play for a fish (which he's clearly announcing to the table that he is at this point). it's entirely possible that he's looking to be raised with a hand like A4, and it's just as possible that has something like 88 and wants to get to a cheap showdown.

I think your best bet is to call her. if you improve on the river and he pushes, you have to fold. if you don't improve on the river, i dunno... you may have to call a small bet, because of the clear possibility of the flush draw. if you improve and he checks to you... i'd still say you'd have to check behind him. In general i hate calling bets when there's no future cards that i can feel comfortable raising on, but getting 41:1 at this point, i'd hate folding.

Need a read on the BB! Does he have trips or the flush draw to make this play?

Read #1 is that he sucks because he's playing with less than half a buy-in.

With only that to go on, I raise the turn to about 1/3 pot size. If he's that bad a player, then if he's strong, he'll reraise and then you can fold. If he's still on the draw he'll call and at least you have made him pay a little bit to see the next card.

The only problem is if the flush doesn't come on the river and he bets big at you -- it could be a bluff but you have to fold anyway (unless you caught an A or a K, and maybe even then).

I always raise on the flop when they do that....and they usually fold. probably abou 80% of the time.

This turn is odd though. Looks like a flush draw to me. Without much time I would probably move allin..but thinking about it more and more...i might just call. if this guy has a pair along with his draw you are pretty much dead in water.

I cant remember which cards were clubs, but a pair and flush draw with that board would be very odd. Dont forget he called a $10 raise.

I put him all in and he called with 88. He thought it was a really good call, but I found out later that hes a calling station who loves to make "heroic calls"

Thats a recipe for disaster in NL and as expected he lost his money later with one of these calls.

I would smooth call and then play the river. You cant tell for sure but it feels like you are up against a novice player. If he is playing a pair this way he is not protecting his hand properly and in this case I believe using position would dictate a smooth call so you can hit your hand cheaply. If he is playing a 4 this way you are getting away cheaply and can fold the hand on the river if he comes out swinging. I would probably be willing to call up to 1/4 of the pot on the river if no club comes. Basically, I think it is impossible to read this type of action as it could mean anything from a full house to a 7 high flush draw.

You could call the $2 which would give you correct odds to hit your 6 outs, but I also think its +EV to try to take the pot away from him. If he folds half the time then you make money. Most people wont call that all in bet
