how stupid was this play?

Postby briachek » Tue Aug 09, 2005 10:50 pm

Villain is new to the table and has been very loose and aggressive so far in his first orbit but hasn't really shown a hand. Was this move just dumb? what if I was in position.

Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em, $ Hero (10 handed)

SB ($87.83)
Hero ($118)
UTG ($55.50)
UTG+1 ($89.30)
UTG+2 ($102.60)
MP1 ($140.45)
MP2 ($101.50)
MP3 ($94.50)
CO ($54.45)
Button ($92.40)

Preflop: Hero is BB with [Qs], [Kc]. SB posts a blind of $0.50.
2 folds, UTG+2 calls $1, 1 fold, MP2 calls $1, 1 fold, Button calls $1, SB (poster) completes, Hero checks.

Flop: ($5) [Th], [3h], [Jd] (6 players)
SB checks, Hero checks, UTG+2 checks, MP2 bets $5, Button folds, SB folds, Hero calls $5, UTG+2 folds.

Turn: ($15) [Qh] (3 players)
Hero bets $10, MP2 calls $10.

River: ($35) [Jc] (3 players)
Hero bets $12, MP2 raises to $35, Hero folds.

Final Pot: $82

Results in white below:
MP2 doesn't show.
CO doesn't show.
Outcome: MP2 wins $70.50. CO wins $11.50.

I called with the draw and decided to try and represent the flush and maybe my queen was good. I thought the river would look like a value bet. That river card wasn't good but I figured I would at least try to get to a showdown cheaper than if I checked.

Nothing really wrong with it unless the guy is a calling station.

The important thing is you folded to the raise.

The problem is...if he calls you must be beaten...right??

I'm not a big fan of this play. You have no reads. You're OOP. Villain is showing strength. You're attacking strength which is dangerous. You are drawing and trying to represent something. Yuck.

I think there are much easier spots to try to make $. Not that this couldn't be done, but this is high on the fancy play scale.

B -

If Villian is the type to bet one-pair hands on the flop in an unraised pot AND can lay down a hand, then I like the move. However, if he is the type to push a flush draw on the flop and is loose, I dont like it.

I do this often with straight draws on 2-suited boards, treating both the flush and the straight as outs. Only do this in heads-up pots where you are pretty sure that the other guy does not have the flush draw though.

As for the river bet, I would have shut it down. If he is tight, when he calls on the turn he likely has more than 1 pair. JT, QJ or 33 are likely holdings. He's probably going to pay to see the flush, and with the board pairing - its curtains for you. I do like the turn bet though.
