Help with hand, please?

Postby Cactus Jack » Thu Sep 01, 2005 12:37 pm

The damn converter doesn't work for some reason. Not a recognized format. Did I play this ok? I'm Action Al. Villain is pumpkinsfan460 and is an UltraAggresive 41% VPi$P.

FullTiltPoker $0.25/$0.50 - No Limit Hold'em Seat 1: Action AL ($93.80)
Seat 2: jelty ($43.95)
Seat 5: pumpkinsfan460 ($48.60)
holdem19 posts the small blind of $0.25
pumpkinsfan460 posts the big blind of $0.50
The button is in seat #3
*** HOLE CARDS ***
Dealt to Action AL [7c 7s]
solidturismo calls $0.50
Action AL calls $0.50
jelty raises to $1.55
pumpkinsfan460 raises to $2.60
solidturismo folds
Action AL calls $2.10
jelty calls $1.05
*** FLOP *** [3s 7h Ks]
pumpkinsfan460 checks
Action AL bets $6
jelty calls $6
pumpkinsfan460 raises to $12
Action AL calls $6
jelty calls $6
*** TURN *** [3s 7h Ks] [Jh]
pumpkinsfan460 bets $34, and is all in
Action AL folds
jelty folds

What do you put him on? Would you have called? I put him on KK.

pumpkinsfan460 shows [Kd Ad] (a pair of Kings)
pumpkinsfan460 wins the pot ($42.35)

I hope that my fold showed more maturity and no-how than weakness. If I'm a pansy, I'll have to live with it. Or, maybe, I just suck.

I would have reraised him all in on the flop. If he has KK so be it....but I think you have the winning hand there more times than not.

Thanks, both of you.

Brian, I got it. Most of the time I wouldn't even consider it, but this seemed an exception to the rule. I was wr...wro...incorrect. :)

DS, thanks a lot, man. This was rather disconcerting to me.

He reraised from the BB. He check-raised on the flop. Then, all in on the turn. Having stepped back from this for a minute or two, yeah, this is NOT how I would have played a set of Ks, esp check-raising on the flop. That should have cut off all the betting right there. His all in on the turn probably meant he didn't want any callers.

During the heat of battle, it's hard to keep one's wits, esp when one is a half-wit to begin with. My lack of experience shows it's ugly face here, I'm afraid.

Sorry, guys, this one simply rattled me, badly. Thanks very much for the help.

No problem Cactus. Play on dude.

One thing that might help you is if you move down a level and play there for a while until you get comfortable playing big hands like these. You said you were afraid, which is understandable everybody feels it, I know I do but in this type of situation you gotta be pretty darn happy.

As far as being in the heat of battle and making decisions, what really helps me is when somebody does something out of the blue like moving all in suddenly I always take my time in deciding what to do unless I have the stone nuts but even then I don't always act right away because there may be an opportunity to trap some dead money in there if there is more then one player in the hand.

Replay the hand and the betting in you head and then come to the conclusion of what makes the most sense for his actions, I find that the more I do this the better I am at reading hands.

i'm not saying not to trust your reads but there are just some situations i am willing to go broke for and this is one of them. Its been said before, set over set is what bankrolls are for.

There is no such thing as "always" in poker, I guess. But the answer to the question, "Should I fold this set because I fear my opponent has a higher set?" is (almost) always "HELL NO!"

Also. People who hit top set on a draw-free board are rarely that aggressive. With top set you want callers, you don't want to be pushing people out. Yes there's a flush draw on the turn but it's a backdoor draw only, so no reason to be pushing. Given this guy's betting pattern and his very aggressive nature, I would probably call with 73 on that board, let alone 77. (Of course that's easier to say having seen the results....)
