A hand where I received heavy criticism

Postby Suhleafs » Thu Sep 15, 2005 4:53 pm

This was at a friend's 1/2 live NL game which he hosts twice a week.
The situation: I'm already down $200, the other player has me covered.

He limps utg, a few others limp, I'm in with [Tc] [8c], blinds check, the flop is:

[Kc] [7c] [Th]

The utg leads out and bets $17, which was more than what was in the pot, my estimate would have been about $12 in the pot. Folded to me, I tried to make a "play" and moved all in for the rest of my chips, about $180 at that point. Folded around to him, he thinks thinks thinks, after about a minute makes a reluctant call. The turn was [9c] and the river was the [5d], I turned over my flush and he disgustedly turns over two red aces.

For the next hour, he continually bashed me at how bad my play was and how I was able to move so heavy with "just" a draw. I think he misread the fact that I also did have a pair.

I'm still not sure what to think of this hand, what do you guys think?

If you move all-in EVERYTIME you have KK in that same spot, then moving all-in is correct.

If you raise differently with KK there (and you should be raising KK here), then make that raise instead.

If he calls, you know your hand is no good. He is likely to check to you on the turn. If you improve, move in there. Otherwise, you check and fold to a river bet if you don't improve. 1/2 the time you save about $100, 1/2 the time you improve to the winner and then make him call with the worst hand.

The key is to make HIM make a mistake. In this instance, the big mistakes you are trying to get him to make are: 1) fold to a medium raise on the flop, or 2) call after you improve. He makes no actual mistake by calling with any hand that beats a pair of T's here. You only make money in the long run when you force your opponents to make a mistake.

If you don't fold the best hand every once in awhile, you're probably not playing your best poker
