10 / 20 Hand for discussion

Postby droqqa » Mon Sep 12, 2005 12:25 pm

10 / 20 NL on Party, I have about 2300, villian in this hand has 1900. Villian is tricky and aggressive, but is otherwise a pretty-good player who does not play trash. I get [Ad] [Ah] in MP. There is a late position poster. UTG limps, UTG+1 (Villian) limps, folds to me. I raise to 140. Only villian calls.

Flop [Kd] [Kc] [7s] Pot = $350

Villian checks, I check behind.

Turn [Kd] [Kc] [7s] [Td] Pot = $350

Villian bets $275, I call. Pot = $900

River [Kd] [Kc] [7s] [Td] [4h]

Villian goes all-in for about $1500. Hero ?????

Post your thoughts on my line on the flop and turn, and what I should do on the river.

Given your read I fold this. You played this very passively and thus did not get any information on his holding. He could have AK or QQ here. Unfortunately absent any further information, I can't see how you call unimproved AA here.

The way he played it looks a lot like trip K OOP. He checked to the raiser, hoping for a check -raise opp. He bet the next street for value, and then pushed the river (a mistake in my opinion). But you see sets played like this all the time. Can he make this play with QQ? Maybe. It is a gutsy play. But if you call, expect to see a K.

In my opinion if you wish to play your aces with this flop you need to bet the flop or raise the turn. Otherwise you are really proceeding blind.

I love your check on the flop, but I hate your call behind on the turn.

My line would be check the flop, raise the turn to $750. If he calls that, you check/fold the river. Using this play, you are repping AK by a classic slowplay.

The way it played out, I don't have any idea what your opponent has. That usually makes it a fold for me.

I don't really like the play in the hand, I don't think you have an idea of where you are based on the betting. He could have picked up a flush draw on the turn and bet that, then bluff the missed draw. Maybe 89s for a straight-flush draw on the turn. He could have 77,TT,44 and push hoping you have a K. He could have slowplayed a K.

I assume you checked behind on the flop to induce a bet because with two Ks out there is not that likely he has a K. In that case, on the turn you really need to raise it and take it down, and to avoid a river bluff. With this dangerous flop, I would raise the turn to about 800 and fold to an all-in. On the river I'm inclined to check behind.

This is above my level,

If you think he has a King then I would expect that you would not put any more money in the pot.

Would he have re-raised your preflop bet with AK? Would he call with a King in his hand such as KQ?

But at this level I would think the though process goes something like 'what does he think you have to bet $140 preflop?' and how would he expect you to play AK?

You both checked the flop - If you had AK would you check behind him? If so then maybe a check raise on the Turn might be a good idea? Would he expect you to bet out with AK or slowplay it?

In any event calling his turn bet is not a good play IMVHO. The river was a blank and calling the Turn you can not really call the river.

I would have bet the flop and most likely been raised and then have to fold. But, like I said 10/20 is over my head.

I played a live $500 buyin $5 blind and $10 to open and I did win but it was not an easy game for me.

How often will you raise pre-flop and then check the flop when it so obviously hit a normal raising hand? If he's a good player I would think he should have alarm bells going off in his head by that flop check. When you just call his turn bet that should look suspicious as well. For him to push in on the river I think he must have a boat and not be afraid of AK. This is a horrible flop to bluff a pre-flop raiser for all your chips.

I would probably have raised the turn as well, and then been done with the hand. But the way it played out I can't see calling his all-in bet.
