2/4 hand. flopped trips with a river dilemma

Postby Stelvask » Thu May 19, 2005 1:39 pm

I don't have the hand history, mostly because i'm on a different computer and too lazy to go find it. so bear with me.

2/4nl on stars. SB has a full stack, i've played with him before and he's always seemed like a fairly decent player.

I post a blind in the CO and get [Ah][Tc]

MP open limps. I check. SB calls. BB checks.

4-way flop.
$16 pot
[Ts][Td][5h]. checks to me, i bet $12. SB is my lone caller.

2-way turn.
$40 pot.

[2h]. SB checks, i bet $20, SB min raises to $40. i reraise to $80. SB calls.

2-way river.
$200 pot.

[8s]. SB checks, i bet $100, SB moves in for ~$200 more. I fold.

Anyone check this river? anyone call? it looked very much like T8, maybe 55, with and outside chance at 22.

My thought process in only reraising $40 more on the turn, in what was already a $120 pot was i felt i was against a naked ten at this point, and wanted to make sure he stayed in the hand. I probably should have raised to something like $100 or $120, but i'm not sure if he would have called if he did infact hold T8 there.

On the river i can't imagine he would move in on me without the boat. Still, i felt there were too many hands that would call my river bet that i could beat to make the $100 bet worthwhile.

Thoughts?

I wouldnt reraise that turn. It looks like he doesnt care that you have a ten.

Now its possible that he check raised you with a weak hand because you made a weak turn bet, but I doubt it because he wouldve raised more than the min.

Once he check raised the min and then called your reraise, Im checking behind on the river every time.

I think he had 55.

After he check-raised you on the turn, some bells should go off and I probably I wouldn't have reraised him. One possibility is that he had 55, the other that he had a T, and thought you bet twice because he checked to you. He could have thought you have an overpair and think you have the best hand.

On the river, I would check behind him, especially after he check-raised the turn. It's definitely possible he had a boat, but I wonder if he's play isn't also explainable by having a T. If I was in SB I wouldn't necessarily put you on a T in the CO position, but it depends on what hands he thinks you are playing.

I think you played it fine. I would have reraised more on the turn to try to identify his hand. that's the only insight I have for you here.

IMHO, you have to check the river. You have trips top kicker, but on a board that's been paired since the flop, that's not much better than TPTK on an unpaired board.

I think that's especially true on a board where it's the higher card that paired. When the higher card pairs, ANY bet (to me, at least) is saying "I have trips or better." It's just stupid to bet hitting only the lower pair, or any pocket pair.

And therefore, any raise of a bet is saying "I can beat your trips."

So when SB raises the turn, he's saying he can beat your trips. You've told the truth -- you have trips. He's said he can beat that. So at that point, I am looking to get to showdown cheaply, to find out whether he's telling the truth or not.
