I get caught like this all the time, unfortunately I'm playing MY hand and so excited to get what I think is a winner, I kinda go brain-dead. Also, when you read and study a lot, much of what you read a long time ago gets forgotten.
"Good players are always looking for reasons to let go their hand." Lee Jones--Winning Low Limit Hold 'Em.
You know how long ago I read this book???

While thinking of a response that might help us both, it came back to me.
This is Me, playing your hand:

me, looking at my hand <> the little voice
I called on the button--position of strength, probably should have raise, but I didn't--and was mini-raised from the BB. Ok, this isn't that common on these tables, but I do it, so not worried. <he's either not worried, either, or took a pretty weak stab at taking my bet and the blinds> No big deal, so let's see the flop.
Flop comes, and my brain turns off, <at least my ears>. damn Opponent bets--expected--I raise, he reraises. < Where are my warning bells?? This is exactly what I should be looking for. If my warning bells were working, I'd dump this cheese right now>. But, they aren't and I call. Even if I'd just called a pretty small bet to see the turn with a vow of not doing anything at all, it's not as bad as I can make it be. <rationalization, man>
Turn is a blank. Opponent checks. < Checks? What kind of scare card is a 4 of spades??? Where the HELL are my warning bells??? Brain dead, completely. Why didn't I check? Was he bluffing preflop and on the flop??? Maybe, but unless I've seen him do this like 10 times in a row, the warning lights should be flashing like Three Mile Island.> But, I bet. <$3 into a $45 pot? Good god, I just gave this guy 9 to 1 that his hand is better than mine. $3. Not going to scare many people off their hand, I guess. Then, he doesn't just call, he's raising facryin'out-loud. Do my warning bells even exist?>
Next time, in this situation, I'm not doing anything postflop unless 3 freakin' Ks show up on the flop. I promise! <yeah, right>
Not that any of this is what was going on in your mind, bud, but it goes through mine all the time. After my ship is wrecked on an obvious reef. If I didn't make mistakes like this, I'd be a lot richer today. I gotta start looking for reasons to fold.
GL. Glad you posted this, as it gave me a chance to beat the crap out of myself for all the times I've done exactly the same thing. (It's a crowded boat, too, with all of those who do the same thing, all the time.) <rationalization again, man>
