A fun way to play AQ

Postby kennyg » Tue Sep 20, 2005 5:32 am

2/4 prima.

Opponent seems to be a pretty decent player. He has $600. I have about $500.

I'm dealt [As][Qs] in UTG+3. Folded to me, I raise to $16. Opponent calls in middle position and everyone else folds. Heads up.

FLOP $38
[5c][Jc][Ts]

I bet $32. Opponent calls.

TURN $102
[5c][Jc][Ts][9s]

I have the nut flush draw, nut straight gutshot draw, and queen high straight draw.

I check. Opponet bets $56. I move all-in for $418.50.

Thoughts? Like, dislike??

Like it. Seems like the classic fold equity play. You have 15 outs.

Not sure. I'm leaning towards no, because I'm not sure how much fold equity you have - that 9 is scary - it could have completed a draw of his. Also, I think your play looks like a draw - I dont think you play your monsters this way - I know I would just fire again if I had JJ.

I like this play better when the board is something like JJ5T, with 2 to your flush. Usually when your opponent calls your flop bet on a board like this (JJ5), he's got some mid-pair and is hoping you have AK. Then you check on the turn, and "confirm" his read. He bets to get you to fold, and then you move in, making it look like you got trips. Even if he calls (not likely), you probably have 18 or so outs. Unless your oppoent is the type to call with QJ, KJ hands - then this move is bad. But usually, its some mid-pair.

Usually when the villian calls my flop bet with a board of JJ5, he's got a J and I'm screwed.

He folded pretty quickly.

I think QJ-AJ would have a very hard time calling this bet. If it was against me and I had KK... I would laydown, QQ I might call, AA I might call depending... obviously KQ calls. Other then that... what else calls this raise?

Kenny... I understand that there are several hands he could have that he wouldn't call with.... But, there are also a lot of hands he WOULD call with... JJ calls, TT calls... [Kc] [Qc] calls... [Ac] [Qc] probably calls ... [Ac] [Kc] MAY call...

What makes you think that he doesn't have one of these... ?

this guy wouldn't call [Ac][Kc]...too good of a player...knows even with his outs he isn't getting proper odds..same thing with [Ac][Qc]. It's one thing to move all=in..another thing to call one.

You are right abotu JJ and TT..forgot about those.

ha. Good point Chris :) Don't think folding equity has any bearing on those tables.

I've seen this crap at the $100 tables too when they pay me off ;) Really blows your mind sometimes...but should make you really realize that you're pushing a small edge - and pushing yourself into higher variance - by making plays like that at these levels.
