Flopped set with pair on the board - how to play?

Postby snok » Wed Jun 15, 2005 3:22 am

Hiya!
This is a situation that I often get uncertain about how to play.

By position - say you are first to act, after either limping in from blinds or calling a small bet in EP, and you flop a set using a board pair.

How do you proceed? And what factors dictate your play?

And what if you do have position, and flop say Q44 - holding 74s, should you reraise or play it slow?

And what if you are the preflop raiser (eg, AQs) and hit it big with a QQx flop?

Grateful for suggestions!

Q-4-4 flop when you hold 7-4 is going to be very different than a flop of 4-Q-Q if you hold Q-7. Depends on whether you think callers are holding a set with a higher kicker or not and what your table image is.

I led out in my ring game last night 4x BB bet UTG with 6-6 in the hole. (I couldn't limp - it would have been raised before it got back to me.) Loose table, I had 3 callers. Flop came J-9-9. Known for playing very tight-aggressively, I bet out 4x BB again. They all folded. We didn't talk about it, but I don't think they put me on the 9, but at least hitting the J or having a higher pocket pair.
