My First Hand Post (AKo is a junk hand)

Postby MrGeezer » Fri Sep 02, 2005 12:11 pm

My first hand posting. Please feel free to shred me to pieces - I'm a newbie playing 2$ buyins on UB :oops:

Ultimate Bet No-Limit Hold'em, $.02 BB (9 handed)

BB ($.62)
Hero ($1.95)
UTG+1 ($1.18)
MP1 ($.50)
MP2 ($2.58)
MP3 ($1.49)
CO ($2)
Button ($2.88)
SB ($3.98)

Preflop: Hero is UTG with [Ac], [Kh]. CO posts a blind of $0.02.
Hero raises to $0.08, UTG+1 calls $0.08, MP1 calls $0.08, 1 fold, MP3 calls $0.08, 2 folds, SB calls $0.07, BB calls $0.06.

Flop: ($0.50) [3c], [4d], [9s] (6 players)
SB checks, BB checks, Hero bets $0.35, UTG+1 folds, MP1 folds, MP3 folds, SB calls $0.35, BB folds, Hero calls $0.

Turn: ($1.20) [7c] (2 players)
SB bets $1.76, Hero calls $1.45 (All-In).

River: ($4.41) [7h] (2 players, 1 all-in)

Final Pot: $4.41

I've had the unsuited version of AK 13 times since I began recording. I've lost a total of 10.9 Bb per hand with it. If I'd folded it every time it came to me, I would have $5.67 more in my bankroll towards playing the $10 games. What a plonker!

Here's an example of my awful play. I think that I played it right until the turn though, didn't I? I made a continuation bet on a crappy flop, and I had to cal the min raise once the other guy called didn't I? I just shouldn't have called the all in turn bet. Or should I have check-folded the flop?

At the UB 1c/2c tables you have to raise more than that to get people to fold (as you found out). With AK you DEFINITELY want most people to fold.

You can bet AK unimproved but only if you have just 1-2 callers. With more callers than that just check/fold it (or check/call if someone bets very small).

And you rarely want to be calling ANY bets with AK unimproved after you pf raise it.

So:

(1) bet more preflop (bet whatever it takes to reduce the field to only 1-2 callers if you can);
(2) your flop bet is a good size, but with so many callers you're not going to fold them all, so don't bother, just check;
(3) fold that turn you have nothing!
