Fire again on the river?

Postby briachek » Tue May 31, 2005 7:12 pm

First hand at the table. A raise preflop and then all those callers for it to be checked around. I took a stab with a semibluff on the turn but after he called that bet, I assumed he had something he wouldn't fold. He still may not have folded on the river but WTF was he doing in that pot at all or calling my bet

Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em, $0.5 BB (10 handed)

CO ($47.75)
Button ($88.44)
SB ($55.3)
Hero ($50)
UTG ($71.32)
UTG+1 ($52)
UTG+2 ($101.6)
MP1 ($26.53)
MP2 ($52.35)
MP3 ($50)

Preflop: Hero is BB with [6c], [6s]. MP3 posts a blind of $0.5.
3 folds, MP1 calls $0.50, MP2 calls $0.50, MP3 (poster) checks, 2 folds, SB raises to $3, Hero calls $2.50, MP1 calls $2.50, MP2 calls $2.50, MP3 calls $2.50.

Flop: ($15) [Js], [8d], [5h] (5 players)
SB checks, Hero checks, MP1 checks, MP2 checks, MP3 checks.

Turn: ($15) [7c] (5 players)
SB checks, Hero bets $10, MP1 calls $10, MP2 folds, MP3 folds, SB folds.

River: ($35) [Kd] (2 players)
Hero checks, MP1 checks.

Final Pot: $35

Results in white below:
Hero has 6c 6s (one pair, sixes).
MP1 has 3d 7d (one pair, sevens).
Outcome: MP1 wins $35.

I def made of note of this but this is the only hand I saw him doing anything like this for the next hour. Fire again on the river?

I would check behind on the river, its hard to believe your ahead w/ 4 over cards to your pair. in this particular case he might have folded it to a large river bet, but clearly hes an idiot for seeing the flop w/ that junk, calling a pre flop raise, then calling a turn bet w/ only 77 w/ 3 kicker so who knows.

Bri... first off... I wouldn't try to bluff too much at the .50NL games at Party, as these idiots will call w/ nothing... But, if you DO want to bluff, I would do it on the flop... Fire out a $9-10 bet on that crappy, unorganized flop, and if you get a call, you're done w/ the hand... As for why he called the turn, in his mind, the thinking goes "you checked the flop, so didn't have a piece... you bet the turn, so you have a 7... I have a 7 too... Maybe he's playing 72 and my 3 kicker is still good..." It kinda looks like a steal, and he's got a pair... I'm not excusing it, as it's basically the worst poker play in America, but that's what he was thinkin...

BTW... if you're puttin notes on him, make sure that, while he did play a 73, at least they were sooooooted... :D

IMO. You check fold that flop and turn. Your in a 4-5 way flop and you hold an underpair. Also the checks throuugh on the flop would lead me to believe someone hit it hard. Choose times to bluff where it is likely to work, betting into 4 players in bad position isn't one

Bri, I'm glad that you won the hand, and I kind of do like the semi-bluff on the turn but I have a few quick questions for you-

1. What were you going to do if you got re-raised on your semi bluff?(with a pot size bet or a little less)

2. What were you going to do if you opponent did bet on the river when that K hit or any similar card like an A?

I am curious because these are some of the more sticky situations I see happening in NL when you find yourself in a pickle and the correct path is not always clear. How do you know where your at in this hand?

I imagine that you will say you would just drop this hand in both situations when faced with a bet such as I have described but I'm just curious.

DS, I lost the pot to a guy with 73 soooooooted who had 3rd pair, no kicker.

1. If he made a real raise on the turn, I fold. Min raise, I might take the odds to draw.
2. I would have folded if he bet the river with any real bet after I checked. I only bet because no one showed interested on the flop when the pot was big enough. When someone called that $10 bet, I didn't like my hand anymore and felt I had to hit to win which I had to.
