To Draw or Not to Draw

Postby T-Rod » Thu Aug 04, 2005 8:34 pm

Here's a hand I wasn't sure how to play. Villain is a huge calling station. Prior, he called 3 pot sized bets with 2nd pair (I won with tptk).

I believe with 90% certainty that he has an Ace and no flush draw.

Call, fold, or push?

Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em, $ BB (6 max, 5 handed)

saw flop|saw showdown

SB ($28)
BB ($120.35)
UTG ($164.70)
MP ($178.88)
Hero ($222.80)

Preflop: Hero is Button with [Td], [Qd]. SB posts a blind of $0.50.
UTG calls $1, 1 fold, Hero raises to $2, SB (poster) calls $1.50, BB calls $1, UTG calls $1.

Flop: ($8) [Qc] Ad [7d] (4 players)
SB checks, BB bets $15, UTG folds, Hero ???

Thats a strange bet for anyone, let alone a calling station. If your 90% sure he has an ace and thats all, then I would push, but Im not sure thats what he has. I think I would fold.

I think a set or AQ is more likely.

Aggression ffrom a calling station equals a monster. You dont have a very strong draw. I would always draw against a calling station if he has a big stack and is showing aggression because of the implied odds: He is going to play his stack with his set even if that third club fell.

Time to fold there. You sure will get him later.

yeah i was thinking fold (honest!). i saw his overbet and was thinking bb special. just not worth mixing it up w/ a calling station who's woken up. you're even money w/ top pair, but a decent dog to two pair or a set, so mathematically it's a pretty clear fold when you have no fold equity. wait for a better spot against the big station.

Yea, with a 2x the pot bet with A4 it won't take long to find a better spot against this joker.
