Did I play this baot correctly??

Postby sonicboom » Mon Apr 25, 2005 4:14 pm

I had just sat down at the table and only had notes on 2 players.neither of whom were involved in this hand.

Prima poker Blinds are .10/.20
I am UTG and am dealt pocket 10's, I call mp1, mp2, call LP raises 3x, button calls, I call, MP1 calls.
Flop comes 10,9,5 rainbow, I bet 1.75 into a 2.75 pot, only caller is LP.
Turn is the Q of clubs, putting 2 clubs on the board, I bet 3$ into a 6.25$ pot,he hesitated and then finally called.
River is the 5 of clubs, giving me a boat i check he bets the pot, I call and he flips over AJ of clubs and i take the pot. Was checking the river a good play here?? thanks in advance.

Why didn't you go all in on the river? Also your turn bet gives him odds to catch his flush... you happened to get lucky and hit your boat, but I would bet the pot or more there, make him pay to draw.

Also this is one of the few times when I think it is ok to check your set. Risky play, but can pay off for you.

In the game you are playing, I play pretty much only the nuts and play for stacks with them. The nut flush isn't going to start to lay down until much higher you have top boat. Leading at the river will often get him to push if he has any flush, and he will often call check raise all in although it is much scarier.

perfect storm hand where you take his stack....he hits the nut flush while you hit the boat......

Nothing gets me to put a target on someones head quicker than seeing them call a river bet with the clear nuts....

in this case, i think you value bet the river there...if he hit his 'monster' flush with that card, then he 'should' reraise you (probably all in), and you get more dead money in the pot.....if you check, he bets, and you come over all in he'll probably still call you, but could fold.....in either case, a simple raise will probably escalate into all ins on both sides, and you would have taken his stack....

It's an easy all in, but maybe you were too excited and called fast, without thinking about it. The opponent has a lot of money invested, and has the nut flush so it would be a hard hand to fold if you go all in. Your hand is well disguised. Everything suggests you should push all-in.
This is just a reminder to all of us to take an extra second before making decisions on the river, call or raise.
