Big raise with AK preflop ;-)

Postby kennyg » Tue Sep 06, 2005 10:21 pm

My opponent literally just sat down. I've never seen him before but he does have a full stack. I have him covered.

1/2 NL
Dealt [Ah][Ks] on the button.

Bunch of limpers to MP villian who mini raises to $4. One LP caller and I raise to $16. Everyone folds except the MP villian who had just mini raised.

FLOP $43
[5d][9h][6c]

Opponent checks. I bet $32. Opponent calls.

TURN $107
[5d][9h][6c][2d]

Opponent checks. I check.

RIVER $107
[5d][9h][6c][2d][As]

Opponent checks. I bet $32.

How's my play?? Results later.

I hate these hands.

Personally I might be tempted to chk the river but just because I have been on the end of some min raising whoop ass lately. I am not sure this is a value bet since if you are worried the guy has something good he is going to raise the ass off you and put you in a bind. If he does have something gay like 77 he will surely fold.

Also I want to see his cards so I think there is a benefit in just showing this down.

I'd have trouble believing your opponent would check the turn and the river with a set or AA.

I think you are ahead and win.

I'm a little worried about the 1/3 pot bet on the river though. What do you do if he check raises your weakness here?

In the past I would check in these situations... but I felt that I could extract value here. If it were a big checkraise, i might fold...dunno for sure thoguh,,,

anyway, he held QQ anmd called, which makes me think i played it pretty well.

Any different opnions now that u know the hand?

I hope you updated the notes. I am still not sure of the river bet since an overpair might be the only thing you could hope to beat that would call, or an Ax hand that was lower. I think this was hand though that does highlight the power of position since it would be tough to win that hand if things were flipped around.

Given the hand over betting the flop was prob well avoided since it might have induced a big raise or push. I guess I just see min raisers as being evil in general and expect sickness.

I like 1/3 of a pot sized bet on the river. It is the bet that entices a weaker hand to pay off and unless someone is crazy they won't raise a hand that you beat at that price.

I had a hand with TT where I suspect AK re-raised me when I was out of position, the flop was checked around and he bet the turn I called, the river was an A. He bet about full pot, he might have had something else, but it looked like AK to me from the start to finish given his tendencies. I was prepared to call any undercard that might hit and make a judgement call about J or Q. If I had held QQ I might have paid off 1/3 of the pot, but I would have probably got busy on the turn.

I like your play, pretty straight forward ABC, and it works.

I think your opponent's play was weak, how would you have played it kenny? I think I would have bet out on the flop, and fold to a raise. On the other hand an aggressive player could raise AK missed there. Tough play on the other side as.

I think the guy became too passive scared from your preflop raise, but on the other hand i think that he was gonna check raise your ass on the turn, so that check check on the turn was essencial.

Anyways, good hand, well played.
