My Bad Play?? Pot Limit, 2,5 Hold 'em.

Postby Johnny Hughes » Wed May 02, 2007 9:20 am

Yesterday was a bizzarre day in which I played four pots. Folks had a dime up front and I had $650 in chips up $250 when I caught K,K the second hand from the button.

The first guy to act made it $25 and I made it $60 to go. ?? I got three callers, to a pot of $240. The flop came, 9,6,6, with no flush draw. I bet two hundred and all three called, making two all in. The other guy and I agreed to check it down, a common agreement.

The turn came, 9, spades, making a flush draw. Fifth street came the deuce of spades and the pot was won by 8,7 spades. The other two guys each had a pair of tens. The pot winner had a straight draw but was dead to a five and a backdoor flush draw. That 800 should have been mine.

On another pot, I raised with A,Q suited in the big blind and got five callers for a $200 pot. The flop came 5, 3,2 rainbow and everyone checked. It came another 5 and I bluffed $200 into half a mile of them. One fellow called and I spiked an Ace for $600 I didn't deserve.

Be glad your opponents refuse to fold; if they didn't, you just might go broke.

A little more on the first hand. First your reraise might have been to small. Do you expect in this game to get 3 callers to your reraise? If so your reraise needs to be bigger. The check down i bad beyond bad. You reraised preflop he knows you don't have a 6, if he has one he is going to want all your money and there is no way in hell he is checking it down. Other than that you are ahead of every hand he could possibly have, get your money in or get out one hand that couple possibly draw out on you.

Rhound nailed it, Hand #1 the raise has to be bigger there...where I play, a pot would have brought along the two players with tens, so I like a potsized raise, so reraise preflop to $82. Then, on that flop, pot it again IMO, and push the turn like everyone else said. Checking it down is criminal.

Johnny, deserve's got nuthin' to do with it.

When some of the wilder players are all in, it is common for a couple of good players wih bigger stacks to agree to check it on out. It's a tradeoff deal. Sometimes we might have top pair and check it down against a friend with a draw. It stops your losses. Next time we do that, he may be out ahead. We do that in Las Vegas and with old friends. When it gets down to the two of us, we quit betting which works for both of us in the long run.

My first raise wasn't big enough. I sure don't want three callers here in pot limit. This game is so wild that you need to bet the pot, no pun intended, any time you are trying to protect a hand.
