Backraising

Postby Bob314 » Fri Feb 18, 2005 5:30 pm

I was playing in a $200 max $1/$2 blind NL game online the other day when the following hand came up. I picked up Q-Q in UTG+1. The table is playing pretty tight against my raises. Two hands ago I raised K-Qo when it folded to me and dominoed the table. The next hand I came in raising 7-7 and got a caller out of the blinds. I ended up winning a $35 pot at showdown. Now I have Q-Q and I decide to go for a backraise. My logic is that if I raise like I have the last two hands people will A) fold because they figure that I don't raise a third hand in a row with nothing and B) if someone does decide to play sherriff I may have some difficult post-flop decisions to make against an opponent who doesn't want to believe I have a hand. I figure with a back-raise I can pick up some extra bucks against a position raise or something.

It folds around to the CO, who makes it $9 to go. I have notes on a couple of different people at the table, but not this guy. It folds back around from me and I stick to the plan by making it $27 to go. It takes about 3 seconds for this guy to shove his entire stack into the middle (which is about the same size as my $280 stack). I can't call here can I? What do you do when your opponent comes over the top of a backraise and you don't hold A-A? I anticipate a lot of you are going to say fold because I have Q-Q, and that I have neither of the two hands that someone is typically willing to commit all their chips with preflop beaten, so I also ask what you would do if I held K-K instead?

Bob,

It's a close call. With no notes on the player I am inclined to play it safe. I figure that I'm better than my opponents and as a result - often think there is a better spot in a situation like this. On the other hand, a $250+ re-raise? That sounds like, "I really really don't want a call" I would fold both QQ and KK but would be watching him like a hawk to try and confirm my suspicions.

BTW, for what it's worth, Fairbanks is home although I haven't been home for 5 years or so.
