aggression with nut flush

Postby rickjr82 » Tue Aug 09, 2005 11:30 pm

lately ive been raising and reraising(weak bets) on the flop with a nut flush draw, I know i want to keep people in with drawing hands ive had some sucess with disguising the fact that i am on a flush draw and also picking up pots without a solid holding. I will usually fire a continuation bet on the turn

benefits
disguises drawing hand
builds pots
crush non nut flush draws if it does hit
pick up small pots
functions as a disguised blocking bet sometimes

problems
limits field
with non nut draws your odds of hitting are smaller(only 7 outs instead of 9)
getting reraised can take away your pot odds(but it increases implied odds if you do hit)

does anybody play similar to this or have any thoughts?

Lets say you raise and the only person that calls is the calling station, you are likely to get a "free" card to make your flush at the river when you miss the turn, you are going to get called down if you bet, so checking is a better play.

Now lets say you raise and make a continuation bet at the turn against a tighter player, they will not put you on the draw and be more apt to folding a one pair hand to a raise and a turn bet as they have seen you check the semi-bluffed turn previously.

You're play has been naturally varied and getting a solid read on you is tougher. I'm fond of anything that mixes up my play in the most productive way.

I like these kinds of plays a lot as it keeps you in the action and exercises position over actual hand strength, allowing your draw to be the best hand most often.

i think you almost always have to bet. otherwise it's damn hard to get paid off when you hit, unless you're up against a lower flush. besides...if you're up against a couple other players...they might all just fold. which is never bad.

I like that move too. Little blockers seem to stall opponents (and keep them in the hand) and give me the chance to hit the flush. If they come blazing over the top, then I know where they stand.

Rick, we just introduced ourselves yesterday, but I see I have a few hundred hands with you. The only flush I've seen you show is this one. Not too impressive, and your PF raise baffles me. Maybe it was a steal attempt which you got sucked into, but a win is a win. You're in the black in my PT, so you're OK in my book! :P nudge nudge, rib rib, wink wink.

You're the CO here:

lotta, purely a position raise and i was bored, the guy went in and i had to call. (dollar more) i do that sometimes at tight tables like those and show when i steal the pot. Sometimes you piss people off... And when stuff like that happens you help your table image. But you are right about me showing down flushes im working on that(when i do show it down its a big hand). I think i bet too hard on the flop and get overagressive when i do hit. Im a work in progress. All the betting i throw out was been helping me when i do hit though.

i like to bet near-pot with ace flush draws on flop and turn about 80% of the time. and since i started playing suited connectors more, i do the same with about 3/4s the frequency. sometimes you can reraise a weak flop-bet by someone else and take it down on the turn. and theres no feeling like you just sucked out on someone when you finally do hit it
