$25NL In the blinds with AK,AQ vs. AA,KK,QQ (4+Limpers)

Postby Zuccala » Sun Sep 11, 2005 7:21 pm

Hello Guys, I am just wanting to see if I am on the right track. Whe there are alot of limpers and i am in the blinds I tend to make VERY big raises with AA,KK,QQ to try to thin the field (15BB). I will usually fold AQ (offsuit), and with Ak i do not raise big like a with a big pair. I tend to just limp. I am thinking it is not worth the big raise like a big pair because I do have to improve on the flop and anybody calling a big raise prollty has a pair and I am behind alrerady. What do u guys think, am I giving too much away not raising?

EDIT: Sorry, I just noticed you are talking about NL25. I think the following still applies, but from what I understand slightly larger raises may be needed to accomplish what you want with big PP.

I think 15xBB is excessive.
With a lot of limpers, only the early one or two showed any real strength.
The rest are often on draws.

The rule of thumb is 3x or 4x the BB plus 1xBB for every limper.
This has always worked well for me.

Depending on the circumstance I could limp as well.

I play AK more cautiously but I will still make the same sized raise.
If you raise a certain amount with high PP and another with AK, good players will notice.

Your concern is somewhat bizarre... you're raising with AK to thin the field and define your hand, but you're worried you're already beat if a limper calls?
Sure, you could be. Play attentively. AK is a strong hand.
Remember, most people will raise preflop with JJ-AA, or reraise your raise preflop.

If you limp AK all the time I expect you will be losing money, because somtimes the flop will be AT8, one of the limpers has T8, and you lose more overall than having raised preflop and then folding when the action looks unfavourable.

But there are many different strategies...

Thanks for the reply. Yes, all raises are the same amount. My concern was a am hesitant to make a big raise with AK because it needs to improve. I have a hard time getting everyone to fold with my continuation bets. If they folded to them......no problem. But since they do not fold, I am curious if these big raises are +EV or not with AK.

If they folded to my continuatio bets i think its +EV but since they dont I am in need of opinions.
