My question is: Should i have just said ah FUCK and save a BB and fold here, or is this just one of those spots where you pretty much have to donk of a BB in this big pot to see the painfully obvious JTo?

Eh... the pot was huge and you'd only have to be right 8% of the time. Still, I'd expect this river bet to at least mean two-pair. There's no good reason he'd throw out that bet without 2-pair or better on the river. If you had a set or aces up, I'd always call here. Otherwise, lacking a read, folding probably is best. Not saying I'd be able to fold in that huge pot with aces, but still, I think folding would be the +EV play.
