After the hand I played the other day I would have folded. It was very similar to yours. I had 9887, board was J-8-3 rb. I knew when my pot bet was raised that chances were good that I was up against JJxx. I ended up losing my stack because I just couldn't lay it down...

No, you have to move in. For a start, it's a minimum raise (if he had top set he's pushing in his stack, usually, given a typical opponent), but the CRUCIAL thing in any case is that you have a back up draw - you can catch 8 clean outs to a straight if he does have top set, so you're not drawing dead... against any other holding (2 pair, wrap draw, bottom set) you're a fairly big favourite, so this is a good spot to push in your stack, even if he DID make a proper raise.

If he raises full pot, is a known solid player, AND you had no draw to back-up your set, then you can probably fold.

A HUGE crime in omaha is to get in against an aggressive player in a spot where you MAY be drawing dead - such as the middle-set-no-draw example, but in a position where you have maybe a 50:50 chance of holding the best hand, and where you hold a decent draw if you don't, you can consider playing for your stack much more comfortably.
